I have a 94 honda accord with aem cold air intake I was told that in order to get the most out of my intake was to cut the splash shield and buy a aem bypass valve but I notice I would have to cut my inlet pipe in half wouldn't that cause me to lose hp and the sound that the intake gives. So what's the pro and cons with the bypass valve and should I just keep it the way it is or cut the splash shield and buy a bypass valve?

I wouldn't cut your splash shield out.You should get a bypass valve if you are worried about hydrolock.Is it rainy a lot where you live?You only lose a couple of HP to the bypass valve which is worth it to most people.I don't drive my car in the rain ( I drive the beater if it's supposed to rain)so I don't really worry about it.I have been caught in the rain while I was out though and have never had a problem.My fender liner is missing too because the tires rubbed and tore it out.

You lose 1hp. I think it is worth $500 IMO. The thing is that it may be hard to get in a situation to hydrolock the engine, but at least now you know you cant. Not all puddles can be avoided.

I lost my fenderwell too. sucks ***. but it was only like $35 for a new one from the dealer. and all new clips of course which were like $5 total for all of them.

don't cut the splash guard.

My car is lowered about 3.5 in front and 3.0 in rear. I was just told that with the splash shield there it's blocking the air to the filter. If I would cut a square section where my filter is then it would work better.

no... splash shield is there for a reason . youve got a crucial drop ... bypass valve or not .. id keep the fender well plastic ... and convert to a short ram intake .... is 3hp or so worth you ruining your whole engine ?

IMO, get the bypass valve. i saw a video of a aem cai/bypass valve put on a nsx engine. they took the cone and put it in a 55 gal fish tank full of water then cranked the engine. the driver got behind the will and began to rev the engine. the water was sucked up and then dispersed through the bypass. they emptied the tank and the nsx was fine. u will probably notice a difference with the bypass valve compared to ur splash guard. the bypass valve will allow u to take in more cold air, i think u'll notice a gain in power cause ur guard is restricting the amount of air ur taking in.(just my opinion) also, the valve only costs 50 bux, pretty good if u ask me.

yes .. but doesnt it require the airfilter to be completely submerged
for the airflow to be pulled through the alternate bypass ? what about
partially submerged filter ? what about a wet filter after being
submerged? still way too risky of destroying the engine for like +3hp if you ask me ok ill stop flooding this thread with my opinionzz hehe laterzz

Um, they first tested the bypass with the filter partially submerged. It works under all conditions.

Doesn't the air flow in through the lower front bumper region to that area? If it didn't, there would be a vaccuum in your fenderwell anyway due to the air flowing around the bumper and fender. It would be better to channel air from the front of the car to the filter(coolest and under pressure). I'm sure the tire would cause a lot of turbulence too. Even though this might be a couple HP difference anyway so I guess I'll shut up now.

its not like its a ram air or anything like that. exposi0ng the cone to open road only increases the chances for a rock to rip a hole in it, for it to get soaked (hence the term splash guard), or generally get dirtier faster.

you lose more than 1hp...

With my bypass valve on I lost about 5-7hp around the 4000rpm area, other areas, I didn't lose anything...

I have dyno sheets to prove it...

I would chaulk that up more to a dyno irregularity than the bypass valve. Plus, unless you installed the bypass on the dyno, you won't be able to get accurate numbers.

Im sure its worth the $35, but I live in colorado and I drive mine in the rain or snow. I have been through a hugh puddle where I couldnt see anything but the intake was alright. It would be a wise investment though, these are one of the things that you dont want to fix after something goes wrong.

yes its 100% effective. if its raining and you filter gets submerged by water, you have a dead motor. if you have a bypass valve, it will suck the air through that filter. this has been discussed 900 BILLION times. no offense jon

yeah, i never know if its gonna be rainy or dry, ive noticed the last few weeks the weater forcasts for my area have been off by like 30 degrees, i think im gonna stop listening to t.v. but then again, if its on t.v. it must be real.

No, do not cut the splash shield. And get the bypass.

I tore my splash shield off curbing the car to avoid an accident and I hydrolocked my engine 3 weeks later. That was one year ago, and I'm just now finally getting my car back to some semblance of normalcy.

I will answer this question one last time. Every other board I have been on this question has been beat to death like a dead horse.

1. You do not need this bypass valve if you are not going to be driving in rain. If there was a flood or really bad rain don't drive. You can drive, when your going through the puddles just drive slowly.

2. The 1st gen bypass valve has been discontinued and a lot of people are having troubles with the new ones as well.
i.e lodged in there throttle body, and the foam just coming off over time.

3. Stop asking this question, please god.
