burning rubber smell...cause?
there's something wrong with the front passenger side tire on my '89 accord LX. part of the hubcap has been worn away, and i've been smelling this burning rubbers smell coming through the ventilation when i have it on fresh. any idea what this might be? could it be from hitting a curb? if it helps, i just dumped a rebuilt enqing in the car and all the shocks and struts anda ll that were replaced. any help would be apreciated. thanx a lot.

it's rubbing the hubcap?
only thing I can think of that would rub the hub cap would be the fender, if you had the car seriously slammed.
are you certain the hubcap damage is related to the rubber smell?
Does the smell correspond to hard driving?
otherwise check the belts and look for any hoses that mya be out of place and on a hot manifold somewhere.

i don't think it corresponds with hard driving, i started smelling it about a week ago, and i couldn't smell it today. i went over the curb fairly hard, that could be it, i guess. what should i do to check all that stuff?

I do not believe you are getting what we are saying.........
is your car lowered an extreme amount?
are your power steering belt/altenator belt possibly rubbing?
is there a rubber vacuum line or other similar rubber line that has been knocked loose and is touching the engine?

ok, i see what you're saying, it's probably nothing to do with the tire. well, i hope nothing's loose, it's not lowered a lot or anything, and the dealer put in a rebuilt engine with only 40,000 miles on it, and he fixed everything, so i don't think it should be. Like i said, i stopped smelling the smell in the last few days. so it seems normal. think i should take it in to have it looked at?

I smelled something burning after I had a timing belt/water pump job done on my 87. It turned out to be one of the splash shields wasn't bolted up properly and was resting on the belts. It smelled like burnt plastic/rubber. You might want to check that...

how do i check that? is it complicated? that makes sense cuz the dealer that dumped the new engine in there had to adjust a whole bunch of stuff and he already had to fix something similar to that where automatic transmission fluid was coming out. thanx.

turn of the motor
pop hood
use flash light if need be
pull on the trottle cable alittle
look and see if you can see any *lite* smoke coming from anywhere
also use your nose to smell where it's coming from.
my guess is that it's one of you belts/pully.
