the thing about auto tranny, you cannot drain out all the juice with one drain, you have to drain it, drive the car, drain it again, you have to do it 3 time, so 6bottle and you'll have it done.

Re: atf- what to use? (iam7head)
i know you have to remove the drain plug, drain 1/3 of it, add, drive for 15 mins, drain another 1/3, add, drive for 15 mins, and drain again 1/3 and add.. and it should be pretty much out. So you think i should get like just a 15 case of it or something?

for a 1996 honda accord the manual reads as Honda Premium Forumula ATF OR Dexron II ATF.
A transmission fluid change is NOT the same as a flush.
The regular service changes are only drain 2.5 quarts and put 2.5 quarts back in. The flush is the process where you drain, fill, drive and repeat 3 times.

by my manuals (94 and 98) state that you may use Dextron II in a situation where Honda ATF is not readily available but to change it out to Honda ATF as soon as you can.

So for a transmission fluid FLUSH, do you:
1. you drain all of it and fill and repeat 3 times or
2. drain 1/3 of it, add, drive for 15 mins, drain another 1/3, add, drive for 15 mins, and drain again 1/3 and add

that could be the case however I have seen the dealer put dexronII in when my customers show me their old receipts. I do not have paper manuals i use the Honda Service Express subscription.

Re: (sony224422)
you can use dextron II , dextron III or Honda atf-z1....
As for tranny flush , the way it is told here to drain some, add, drive, drain, add drive etc etc,, that is the most bogus and ridiculous way to flush a tranny that i have heard ,who the hell came up with that stupid idea,,
If you want to flush the tranny properly, you got to take it to a shop that has a flush machine.........Not this Mickey Mouse thing described above ...
So basically unless you have a flush machine you cannot flush the tranny entirely and properly...............Unless you want to use a **** load of fluid,, start the car, disconnect the cooler line and keep on adding fluid till it comes out totally clean,,

Re: (Honda-Master)
you can use whatever you want in your transmission but I'll go with Honda ATF based upon personal expericence with MY CAR where I flushed the trans when I first got it and they told me dextron III was ok to use. They filled it up with dextron III and i bottle of lubeguard and the trans started acting up less than 15K later... I changed back to Honda ATF and it works just fine now.............I learned my lesson the hard way............i bought the car at 86K and now it is at 144K 5 years later.....

Re: (Honda-Master)
First of all, you never let any shop use their flush machine for your transmission.
The reason for the drain, refill, drive procedures is that there is transmission fluid still within the torque converter so the initial drain will not get all of your transmission fluid out. If you have ever changed your transmission fluid before you would know this because, even after the 2-3 times of drain, refill, drive you can still see that the fluid is dark.
So you will need to repeat that process at least 3-4 times until your fluid is the same color as in a new bottle. You actually don't need to drive around after drain and refill you can just start the engine and run through all the gears while parked. You can drive around but running through the gears seem a little more convenient.

Ok. In the Honda service manual this is what they state as a transmission fluid flush. Change the fluid (not 1/3 of it, every drop that will drain out). Drive the car for a few miles, (I would go at least 10 miles, and use reverse a couple times). Change it again. Drive the car again. Change one more time. That is what the Helm manual considers a trans flush. I would get 10 quarts, you will definitely have enough with that. Good luck.
PS: when you drain the fluid, only a little more than half of it actually comes out of the transmission. That's why you have to do it three times. If your fluid gets changed regularly, you never have to flush, cause it never gets that dirty.
