Airflow Problem 98' ex

Airflow Problem 98' ex
My mother's car is having problems staying on idle.
It starts up fine and then after about 20 seconds or so and will die.
I'm not sure if it's a problem with an egr valve or something else.
Anyone have a clue or idea on what it could be?

Does your check engine lite come on and stay on? Does this problem happen every time you start it?or only in the morning during warm up?or only when its hot?will it happen when its in drive?or does it die when putting it in drive?
these kinda questions i need to ask it will help to narrow down the causes to this problem.
I dont like guessing but if i had to i would check for any vacuum leaks?if all checks ok then i would check fuel delivery?(pressure regulator,fuel injectors,etc.)or check air in take system?

Right now however it is stalling on start after he had cleaned it.

Just bought a 98' EX V6 (2 days ago). When I picked it up it had the idle surge issue which i assume is the IACV. The only thing I've done so far is charge the battery (I suspect it has a bad alternator). Once I put the battery back in the car I now have the same symptoms you describe.
Do you notice the smell of fuel? I do, it almost seems like it's flooding.

Well I found my problem :-) Like I said I just bought this car so I didn't realize some of the instrument cluster lights weren't working. So between the low fuel light bulb being dead the gas gauge being off I didn't realize I was in fact OUT OF GAS!
I've pulled the instrument cluster and will be replacing all the lights this weekend (waiting for bulbs).
I'll be cleaning the IACV tonight.
