Accord front rotors without tearing front end apart
I have a '92 Accord that's got 256k miles and serving reliably, and trouble free, until it needs fixed.
Seems the easy stuff to fix (fuel filter, starter) never goes bad, and it's always something that's engineered in a convoluted manner which fails.
Well, has anyone successfully installed new front rotors on a similar era Accord without pulling the front end apart? I live in the rust belt, and stuff gets rusted in place pretty hard after 20 years.
What special tools are needed? There's several types of pullers out there, and it seems that one of them ought to work. Just trying to save myself some trouble. I have the caliper/caliper bracket off and secured, the axle nut off, and just need the hub off. Even wrestled the four bolts out so the rotor can wiggle and spin on the axle. Just can't remove it.
Thanks,
Matt

These are not like normal hondas where the rotors just slide off. I'm not sure why honda used this design but they are no fun to work on. Special tool needed = press

You have to remove the hub/axle nuts to replace the front rotors? What type of brake setup does a 92 Accord has? I just replaced my front rotors on a 2000 Accord and I didn't need to remove either the hub or the axle nut. The toughest part was getting the rotors off the hub but the rotor has these holes that allow you to screw two 8mm bolts to "push" the rotors off the hub.

the answer to your question is no. at least from my point of view.
your likely going to destroy at least one of the bearings, because it usually goes like that.
the 92 has a Hub over Rotor configuration, and yes it's a shitty design and yes it sucks.
I did the Rotor over Hub conversion when I did mine, which is a typical setup for any car and the newer Honda's. And much better for future maintenance. I did have to take the knuckles off the car to do it, and I used a propane torch to warm the knuckle to the touch before using a brass punch to pound out the old bearing. Put your new hub bearings in your freezer for 24hrs prior to installation (standard practice for me for inside bearings, makes them contract and easier to install).
There is a write up in the FAQ how to do it, costs the same either way, so it's better to do it now imo.
you'll need the wheel bearings and brake pads for your model accord, and the hubs and rotors of a '99 Acura CL

Re: Accord front rotors without tearing front end apart
i've been successful in the past at getting hubs loose from the knuckle with some extra long bolts that fit in place of the original bolts that hold the hub to the knuckle. these cars weren't from the "rust belt" so i don't know if it would still work as well in your case- but here's what you would do...
WARNING: eye protection is extremely important when smashing metal things with hammers. cars can crush your head like a watermelon. support the car securely on jack stands if you aren't using an over head lift. damage to you or your property is your responsibility. follow these instructions at your own risk!
first you need bolts with the same thread as the original but about 20mm longer. two is enough most of the time, but you may want all four... so with the calipers and brackets off and the axle removed snug up the lower ball joint nut. install your "longer bolts" turn the knuckle to lock so that you can get a good swing at the "longer bolts." (oh and it's good to soak the hub mating surface in penetrating oil) alternate hammering back and forth between the two/four "longer bolts" until the hub pops out. it's almost necessary to have an extra set of hands holding the knuckle steady for you while you're swinging at it.
this shouldn't damage the hubs since you're applying force to the part (outer ring) that is pressed to the knuckle. and once the hub is off of the car you can unbolt the rotor and align the notches with the ears of the outer ring to remove it.

Re: Accord front rotors without tearing front end apart
I found this...

now, the question is how to press on the hub after new rotors are installed?? Do they slide on fairly easy, or are they a pain in the butt?

we always just put a little anti-seize on the hub mating OD and pull it up with the bolts, alternating of course to pull it up evenly. shouldn't take excessive effort.

Re: Accord front rotors without tearing front end apart
that sounds like it's a lot easier on the bearing than using a slide hammer, by gently forcing it out rather than literally hammering it apart.
