I have a 1998 accord lx - 4 cyl, manual transmission. There is a strange humming noise coming from the front. First thoughts: wheel bearings or tires. Replaced the front tires with new ones - the noise did not change what so ever. Replaced the driver front wheel bearing (that's where it sounded like it was coming from) - also to no avail. The noise is audible whenever the car is in motion - no matter what the speed. It sounds like a rolling noise; the sound sort of oscillates relative to the speed of the car. The faster the car is moving the faster the noise is made. Sounds like the sound oscillates at the same rate as a wheel revolution - so once you exceed a certain speed it just becomes a consistent humming noise. When turning the noise does change in volume slightly. Not engine related (car makes the same sound in neutral and in gear). It sounds different than the bearing noises I've been used to, so I'm trying to diagnose it closer before doing all the work related to replacing the passenger wheel bearing. Other options I'm considering are bearings in the transmission or the bearing along the "longer" CV axle that has the support bearing mid-way. Any ideas? Sorry for the long write-up, just trying to give the best description possible! Any help is greatly appreciated!

If the sound goes away after pressing the clutch down its probably the other wheel bearing or one in the back.

The intermediate shaft bearing will normally outlast the car.

If it is an axle/wheel bearing issue you can try to narrow it down a bit.
Raise up either the driver or passenger side front wheel up. Make sure the other side is on the ground. Start engine and put the trans in gear. If it is axles or wheel bearings, one side should make the noise or be louder than the other side. If the sound is the same for both sides, it may be transmission related.

Be careful when doing this. Although the speedometer may indicate 20-30-40 MPH with one wheel on the ground stopped, the opposite spinning wheel will be rotating at double the indicated speed due to the differential multiplying speed from the opposite stopped wheel.

holmesnmanny: How would a wheel bearing noise go away when the clutch is pressed in? Did you mean that the noise would not go away? The noise does not go away when the clutch it pressed in.

I have a 2000 Honda accord and I think my bearings and pressure plate are bad I need to replace them I want to do it my self can anyone help

Sorry i said that wrong. I meant if the noise doesnt go away. Basically you just want to disengage the clutch to rule out one of the shafts. It sounds like its a wheel bearing since the noise is still there.
