CEL is on and i know where the blue plug is. since there is only one wire in the blue plug, how do i loop it? do i just turn the ignition on while the paperclip is looped back to the single wire? i've tried this and no code. i need instructions.

It doesn't have to be the dealer.. Some indepedant shops will do it for $40 or so if you only want the code.. But first things first check the gas cap.

OMG - you certainly CAN read the code with a jumper wire (or a ghetto paper clip!) on a 98 accord! I do it all the time w/ my turbo setup. It's not a blue plug, it's a black 16 pin OBD2 port.

Find the OBDII port - under the dash, to the leftmost side. Place the jumper wire into pins 8 and 13 (counting from the top left to the right (1-8), bottom left to right )9-16)), put the key into the ignition, turn it to ON (don't start) and read your codes from the CEL light. Long blink = 10's digit, short blink = 1's. Very easy.

i found the plug in which your are speaking. it's on the driver's side next to the hood release. i tried the "8" and "13" but nothing happened. 98, lx accord, 4cyl.

oh **** I just re-read my post, and the OBD2 connector is not horizontally mounted. it's vertical - D'OH! If you look at it the "long" way, with the bottom being the left side in my description, that's how it's pinned out. I wish I had a diagram. does this make sense?

look at it with the "left" in my description being the side pointing to the hood release and the "top" being the long edge closest to your door.

thats really not the problem because the plug pins are numbered as well so you can't get it wrong. the problem is that i followed the instuctions and still no code........the CEL doesnt blink at all.

interesting I didn't know they were numbered. you're turning the key all the way to the ON position too (not accessory)?

are you using a piece of wire or just a paper clip? maybe you need to use a wire? (too much resistance on a paper clip?)

I'm just throwing thoughts out, I've read my codes many times this way using a jumper wire so I know it works... and works well.

you're hooking the wire up before turning the key right?

not sure what else to suggest. I've always just put the wire in and turned the key to ON and the codes start flashing...

couldnt get this accord to replicate your success. maybe autozone has an OBD scanner.

went to autozone. they used the scanning tool but gave no codes. all they were able to tell me was it had to do with exhaust gases, so egr, o2, or cat......great. that much i knew pretty much. ill just have to bite the bullet and pay the damned dealer and pay them to tell me the problem.

if autozone can't pull any code, that's why you couldn't get it w/ the jumper wire trick also. do you have the code right when you start the car? If I'm not mistaken that's the only way you can read the code, is if it's in the ECU on start up...

autozone pulled the problem just fine. but their scanner is very limited and only gave a generalization of the problem, not the HONDA code but very general. the scanner said "exhaust gases not flowing properly". which could be a code for EGR, o2, or cat.

P0401 is a low EGR flow code that is very common. If it's a v6 model with less than 80,000 miles on it, take it to a dealer for a free fix.
