Default 96 honda accord ex-v6 auto transmission stuck in park.

Ok here is a new one to us.

Wife just called.

hey honey I cant get the car out of park with the engine on. It is stuck in park. I tell her turn engine off, turn key to pre-start mode and pull shifter down with foot on brake pedal. Sorry dont work. So then I say ok do this. Put key in shift lock on side of shifter pull down into neutral, then start then shift to gear.

Ok it works.

What the hell have i got going on. All my cars are sticks except this one. I'm not really proficient on automatic transmissions.

I've read brake switch, solenoid or computer on passenger floor board.

So have anybody seen this one.

Thanks

yup, i have this problem....again as well. its a little piece of plastic in the shifter that honda will want to charge you about $300 for. If it keeps doing it on every start up I would get it fixed. Look in the owners manual and it will give you the instructions on how to bypass it. If you don't have the manual, give me a call - 815 577 9663

The brake switch is more then likly the cause. Easy way to check, press the brake pedal and see if the brake lights come on. No brake lights = busted brake switch = no shifting outta park.

OK.

Now I'm confused wife called today 3 days later. Fuse blew honey not able to get out of park again.

So I came home put a new fuse in started the car pulled out of park. put back in park, tried again and would not work. blew fuse again.

I felt the brake switch it felt warm. not sure if that is it or not.

I'm blowing the brake light switch. the 20 amp fuse under the hood.

I got told about 5 minutes ago that it could possibly be a melted bulb holder, that freaks it out since it is on the same circuit.

well here goes.

I thank dtapia for this one.

per an offline conversation. I went to checking the rear tail light bulbs with voltmeter to see if I had issues.

Every time we put in a fuse it blew it.

car is a 96 accord ex, v6. has the optional spoiler with led.

So dtapia suggested that there could be a short in the spoiler. But first check everything else. Bad bulb, burnt holder etc.

Well after checking all of those. I unplugged the rear spoiler since we have some leds burnt out.

we are now able to apply brakes and not blow fuses.

Hi - as info, I did reply of the little piece of plastic in the shifter as the problem. And, yes, that did fix the problem of the shifter being stuck the first time. I have now crossed the problem again, with the shifter plastic part in tact. Hooray for someone else pointing out the brake pedal switch!!! Cha-ching - that was the problem for me this time. I had no brake lights and was almost rear-ended today and hit the forum for chance if there was a connection. Paid $38 at honda for the part and hubby was able to switch it out. No adjustments needed. Honda-tech rocks!!! Thanks to all!!!
