Default 93 Accord EX runs great until restart

Hi guys,

I've searched and searched for an answer to this and didn't find this specific problem and wanted to get some feedback.

I have a 93 accord ex 5sp that runs great cold and continues to run great after it is warmed up. Can drive it all day long and it runs great, until, I stop somewhere, shut it off, and then fire it up again. Then it runs very rough off idle up to 2500 rpms and then completely smooths out again and runs like a champ to redline.

I have to slip the clutch like crazy to get it going and then no problem.

I've replaced EGR, plugs, wires, distributor and fuel filter. The 02 sensor could be a problem.

Any ideas?

Thank you!

I would guess it could be fuel somehow bleeding into the cylinder. There are two possibilities. One could be a bad fuel pressure regulator bleeding fuel into the intake manifold after the car is off. To test, drive the car til it warms up good. Turn the car off. After 15 minutes take off the fuel pressure regulator vacuum hose from the intake manifold and smell it. If it smells like fuel the fpr is bad.

If that passes, let the car cool. Loosen up each spark plug and then just gently tighten it. They don't need to be tight anyhow but you want them just snug.

Drive the car again and warm it up. Turn it off. After 15 minutes, pull each spark plug and smell it. If it smells like fuel it could be leaking.

If these both pass it could possibly be either the ignitor or coil getting hot after the car is turned off and overheating. However, it could even be a slightly leaking head gasket leaking coolant into the combustion chamber after the car is off. You could do a compression test to check to see that the head gasket is fine.

Hi thanks for the great response and I will check those things.

Another guy mentioned the head gasket but I'm not loosing any coolant so I'm hopeful that isn't it.

I'll check those things and once I figure out what it is I'll post back here.

Thanks!

It could be a leak, though seems like that would make it run weird all the time and not just when the car is restarted.

I'll make sure everything is tight.

Thanks!
