Default 93 Accord clutch slips after long idle?!?

Hey guys, I needed some help if anyone knows anything about this situation:

It's happend twice now, when I leave my engine running idle for about 10+ minutes, the clutch starts to noticably slip right after for about 3-5 miles, which is when I take it easy on the rpm. Then next day the clutch grabs fine again, but I'm nervous about launching it into 1st gear and try not to go past 3000rpm now. Also I avoid rush hour, because who knows how badly I'll slip in bumper-to-bumper long idle traffic. I did drive the clutch pretty hard into 4k+ rpm once in awhile before -- hard shifting

Do i need a new clutch? if so -- how soon, and how much would that cost me? I'm thinking about upgrading the clutch also if it comes down to it. Some people have told me that a new flywheel should be put in opposed to resurfacing -- when replacing a clutch, how critical is that?

i have 185k miles on the motor, it runs perfectly smooth, no problems before, idles smoothly too despite current slipping --- second owner, and I dont know if/when the clutch has been replaced.

Thnkx

I can answer your question pretty good but you didnt list one thing, but here are the options:

Clutch pedal to the floor: 1st check your floormats. This sounds odd but sometimes its as simple as having a little extra under the pedal that keeps the clutch from completely releasing. The extra heat can build up and cause loss of friction resulting in a slip (also check clutch free-play (unless you have a hydraulic operated clutch)). The slip then might go away after driving when the clutch gets a chance to cool down (kind of like brake fade when going down a long hill).

If your pedal is to the floor and all floormats are aside and the clutch free play is correct, and the clutch still slips after a while of idling (with the pedal down), these could be other problems:

-Warped flywheel: this causes the clutch disc to rub against the flywheel which builds up heat and causes a slip.

-Warped pressure plate: just like the flywheel, the uneven surface will heat up the clutch disc at certain spots and cause a slip when you go to drive away.

Now, if your clutch is released and your car is in neutral while it is idling and you still experience a slip after some time of idling these could possibly be your problems:

-oil on the clutch disc- this could cause the disc to loose some of its grabbing abilities, however this problem would usually exist all the time, but it may only happen at idle when the car is still and the oil leaks directly down into the bell housing instead of being blown away while driving. Normally a clutch disc that had been contaminated with oil is considered ruined and would never get better with driving (clutch disc material soaks up oil like a sponge).

-clutch not releasing completely- check your clutch free-play (unless you have a hydraulic released clutch). If the clutch never releases fully then just like before the heat will build up and cause a slip.

I am a student at UTI and gave you all i know for right now. Most likely it will be one of these. I have a 1991 honda accord lx that had a clutch slip. It slipped ALL the time not just after idling. After replacing it myself i found out that the clutch disc had worn so much (at 178,000 miles) that the rivets had begun to wear causing a reduction in friction resulting in the slip. The new clutch fixed the problem and was fairly hard to replace but not too bad (with the aid of a frame hoist). I believe a new clutch set (disc, pressure plate, throwout bearing) cost me about $190 at autozone. Luckily the rivets had not worn through on the flywheel side so i didnt bother to replace the flywheel, and so far have not had a problem.
If you decide not to replace the flywheel it is a good idea to check the runout (warpage) just to make sure you dont cause another problem down the road.
Personally i dont feel you need to replace the flywheel so long as it looks in good condition and does not have runout (warpage) that is out of spec. (usually around .002"- .004" is the most runout you should have).

At 185k on a stock clutch it probably is time to be replaced anyway, but a better clutch package might run you anywhere from $200-500.
