Default 92 honda accord "d4 light" and car wont let me shift gears

Help,

I have a 92" Honda Accord Ex.

First off my car was driving perfectly fine...on one sunday I noticed the d4 light staying on in my car. I took it to walmart auto center. They could not diagnose the problem. I thought maybe my oil needed to be changed or I was low on fluids..the light did not go away.

I took it to the honda dealership. They read my code and they said the only thing that popped up was the torque converter. When they read my code they resetted my radio in my car. I could not operate my radio without first putting in the code. So i did not touch my radio for a couple of weeks. Magically the "d4 light" did not come on at all.

I got tired of riding without the radio after a week or so. So i put the code in. And 2 days later. The "d4 light" came on. While the d4 light is on. The car is stuck in 2 gears. When Im in park the "d4 light is on"..when i shift into "d4" the car does not move, without stepping hard on the gas pedal. Even then it hesitates epecially when Im at a stop light. The d4 light will blink off. No light is on. And then it reappears and the car acts normal.

My d4 issue only happens sometimes!..The car can act fine somedays and then magically it decides for the d4 light to come on. Recently it has gotten worse. The d4 light stays on. The car shift lock will come on. And will click like its short circuting like 50 million times. After sitting for 40 mins idle it will finally stop so I can at least drive home from work.

Now its now even letting me do that. I took it to meineke where they gave me a tune up, fuel filter, ignition set, and replaced my shift thing it worked for all of 3 days and now its worser. It will not even get out of shift lock. I have to manually put in my other set of keys to change the gear. Even when I put it in drive it will not move. I had to get towed today from work. Because it will not move. It will drive in reverse. But the moment you put it in drive it will not budge.

Is the CEL on? If so jump the thing to get the codes(if you know what I'm talking bout to jump) . If no CEL just jump it anyways? Some people say sometimes it could not be on but still something's wrong? Do you believe you transmission may be giving out? What symptoms have you been getting before all this started happening?

If its just all sudden, I suggest checking your ecu and tcu out. Open it up. Check if it got wet, burned out or etc. check the pins.

Btw what about transmission liquid level? Check it.

Over by the kick panel on the passenger side there is a blue connector with two wires. Use a paperclip or wire to jumper these two wires. Turn the Ignition to ON and count the blinks. Click on the TechAuto troubleshooting link in my sig for better details on diagnosing.

Did you try selecting any other gears? Such as D2 or D3 to see if it would allow you to move the car?

If the shift interlock is not working it could be a problem in the ignition switch. There is troubleshooting for that at the techauto website.

Its all of a sudden then it only happens sometimes. The car drives fine any other time. It only when this d4 light magically decides to come on.

I got today off so im about to go outside now and check all of my fluid levels. What type of transmission fluid do I put in my 92 honda accord ex? if it is low. Do I just physically pour it in. Like i do oil?

Okay so my transmission fluid and oil was low. I topped up both fluids so the fluid levels are fine now. But the car is stuck in gear. Like when I put it in drive (d4) it will not move. When I put it in any other gear. 1,2,3 (d4) it will not move. Reverse works fine.

How do I do the paperclip method with the blue thing by the passenger seat?

Is the check engine light on? The paper clip thing. Click Mad Mike's H4A link on his sig. It'll explain it there. If you can't understand reply here and ill try to explain as much.

And uhh I'm not a pro when it comes to these stuff. But I know few stuff. Mad Mike's definitely the guy you'd talk to here. Ill try to help out though. Also try googling your problem. I've seen some posts with same issue you're having too.

The"D4" light means a coupler of different things. The torque converter and or torque converter lock up solenoid is going out/bad. The lower solenoid is the lock up solenoid. It's located under the shift solenoid on the front of the transaxle. Can't miss them. Four "C" battery looking solenoids. Just an fyi you cannot purchase the solenoids from any auto parts dealer. It's only available through the dealer and they are close to 300 bucks each. You will be lucky to find them in a junk yard too. Buy you can remove them carefully and check the screen filter/gasket. They are 80 bucks each so be careful to not break them.

It's on the passenger side, the blue two wire diagnostic connector is above the right side kick panel. You will have to open the passenger door and kneel down to access it. When you find the connector, simply use a paper clip to jump the two terminals. Turn the ignition to ON, not start, and observe the codes.

If the CEL light blinks codes, there is a stored code from the ECU.
If the D4 light blinks codes, there is a stored code from the TCU
If the ABS light blinks codes, there is a stored code from the ABS.

Note what code is stored. Post what code you see and we can try and help.

92 civic ex 4dr it would be best to wait and see what code(s) are being generated by the TCU, rather than guessing what may be the problem.

Although this is for the 94-97 CD chassis, it is basically the same. The main difference is the 90-93 cars have the connector tucked in over by the kick panel, rather than behind the glove box door.

I did the paperclip method. My check engine light comes on but no code blinks.

My d4 light remains solid, so does my check engine, oil or any other. Nothing blinks.

When I manually put in my other set of keys into the shift gear console thing. I put it in neutral and start it up. And my d4 light stays on. Yesterday I did this method and my d4 light was blinking but it just kept blinking rapidly. Not like it was a series of blink. I studied it to see if it was any breaks or pauses in the blinks but it wasnt any.

Today when I started my car up this morning. The gear shift would not move, 2minutes later the car began to act right. I put my foot on the break and I could hear the click of the shift lock being released any my car is acting normal.

Again this problem only happens sometimes. When this d4 light does not come on, the car runs normal.

This is the stuff I have fixed so far at meinieke in the past 3 weeks:

Iridium Plug
Tailored Resistor Ignition Wire Set
Tune Electronic Ignition
Remove and Replace Fuel Filter
Fuel Filter
PGM Fi Relay

After having this replaced the car worked for 3 days with no problems at all. But now magically its starting to act up again.

What do yall possibly think it is? I cant afford to keep throwing parts at my car and its not fixing the problem.

I had a (D4 light blinking/limp mode) on my 92lxcoupe, a while ago. I went the entire 9 yards on it. I flushed my tranny fluid out ( Youtube), took off both external selenoids packs and cleared them out of hard gunk build up. Took abit more, tested both selenoids by hooking them up directly to the battery, one had a very weak click to it, swap it out with a junk yeard one, and the rest is history. Cleared the code and its been smooth shifting for last three years.
Good luck

Make sure that the ECU/Memory fuse is not blown. If it is the ECU will not keep memory of any issues. IIRC with this blown the CEL lights will stay ON and not blink with the diagnostic connector jumped.

Start with the basics, verify the battery is fully charged, and that the battery terminals are clean and tight. Verify that the ground cables are also clean and tight. A cable that is part of the main (-)neg attaches directly to the transmission down by the dipstick. This may be hard to see with the factory air filter box.

Verify all applicable electrical connections are clean and tight underhood. Pay close attention to all ground wires.

Check the ECU and TCU for corrosion at the harness connector.

Next I would move on to the ignition switch. Verify that it makes a good connection.

Check the brake light switch at the pedal.

Click on the 'TechAuto' link in my sig for detailed diagnostics.

Default 93 Honda accord transmission problems

Hi, I have a 1993 Honda accord that is having auto transmission problems. It seems to struggle to go into drive when the car is cold and when it warms up or go's to change gear it seems to like click into neutral and have no drive or reverse at all, almost like it doesn't want to select any of the gears, could anyone help me or give me ideas on what could be the problem here

Is this a new problem that came on suddenly?
Is the fluid full? Have you ever changed the fluid? Mileage?

I'm looking for some help with a flashing light issue on my 92 Accord. When driving in D4 the light on the shifter counsel will go out. The only way to get it back on is to wiggle the shifter. I also noticed that I have no reverse lights but while in reverse and wiggling the shifter the lights come on. Looking for some suggestions on a fix. Thanks!

There is a selector switch on the side of the shifter. Over the years junk can get the swtch dirty. Remove, clean and reinstall.
Not to be confused with the 'sport' button. This gear selctor switch is located under the bezel of the shifter, you will have to remove the console most likely to gain access.

A metal plate covering 2 metal boxes. Suggest pulling your codes first.

I know this might sound a little silly, but in the beginning you mentioned the the dealer resetting the car and no radio and the car worked fine.

For fun, can you unplug the battery, let the computer reset, and run it like that again with no radio? It doesn't make any sense, I cannot think there is anything in the radio area connected to this issue, but I'm simply noting what you have said. I've heard of strange things before (I had a friend tell me when you flipped down the visor on his drivers side the car would shut off. I thought he was crazy, but he showed me. It turned out the wiring for the light bulb that turns on when you flip down the visor had worn out the insulation, causing a short when flipped down, which weirdly was connected to some other item in the car (ecu, ignition, injectors, can't remember) and would cause the error and car would shut off. Taped up the insulation, car ran fine for year afterward. My point being that sometimes really weird things can happen, even though unlikely).

It can't hurt to try this, all that can happen is it still doesn't work right.

Good morning, Honda Heads.....I just recently 3 days ago picked up a 93 Accord EX auto, used but in pretty good shape cosmetically and interior wise, as it was as close as I could find to my old 92 EX 5 Speed I had 25 years ago in my High School and College days, so it is my winter project to try and get it close to my one that I loved to death.

So with that said, I am just beginning to learn what is all going to need to be done to her, so I am starting with the darn auto in it. Here is what I have come across in the last few days while having some spare time to start checking things out

1---Upon initial start up The D4 light is light up while in park, and for 15 or 20 seconds after it is started and won't come out of Park.

2--once it does go into gear it will shift up and down, but seems to be limited to 3000 rpms

3--with all the above happening, then while driving around in D4 the indicator light will come on and go off intermittently

Leaning towards the TCM, but wanted to reach out, and see if I can confirm my thoughts on it, as I have enough wrench skills and time to try and fix some of things that will need to be done on it, my abilities stop and the parts below the valve cover.

Thanks, Traivs

Travis, a common thing to do in an attempt to see if it is a simple fix: pull all the solenoids off and clean them. When you pull one off, you will a screen that should be very clear and clean. It often gets clogged, and it can cause issues. It's what I would do first, while also checking fluid level in the transmission, another common item to find (low fluid or too high).

Thanks for the info, was planning on changing all the fluids in it, since who knows how old they are anyways, fresh fluids are never a bad thing anyways.......I'm not a lot bigger than I was when I had my old, but darn, I forgot how tightly packaged everything was in my old car.......I guess I got spoiled, being able to either just throw the creeper on the ground and roll around and under my Duramax for fixing and working on things.
