Default 92 EX: Integrated Control Unit (ICU) and several symptoms that are not 100% consistent

I have two 92 Accord EX's (the 5-speed since new and the auto for 3 months).

There are several symptoms in the "new" one that seem like they might point to a failing ICU. No similar symptoms on the 5-speed.

I can get a ICU for $35 from a local yard or potentially swap in the other ICU from the 5-speed.

1) Can the ICU fail is a way that is consistent with the symptoms below?

2) In this case would it be worth throwing the part at the issue rather than chasing down other leads? Any reason the 5-speed unit wouldn't be interchangeable?

3) Is there a trick to getting the ICU out? (I tried once and things didn't seem to want to move)

Symptoms:

- Driver's Door does not turn on the ceiling lamp (although it has on occasion when I first got it).

- Brake Lamp Warning Light consistently lit but intermittently will not be lit for one trip in the car. (No brake bulbs out ... tried to troubleshoot this system per the manual but didn't get anything that isolated problem to the sensors in the taillights.)

- Headlight Warning Chime consistently does not work however on one occasion it did work.

- Intermittent Wipers generally work correctly, however once or twice turning the wipers on to intermittent did not immediately cause the wipers to start as it usually does. Turning off/on would get them going.

I guess the biggest questions are: Are the ICU's I have interchangeable and is there a trick to getting it out? I hate to yank on parts without understanding how they come out and it's pretty cramped up under there.

Drivers Door/ dome light; the spring loaded switch in the drivers door jamb is the ground path for that circuit.
Push it in to get to the phillips screw, remove it and lightly sand the contact and the place where the contact touches the body.

Brake light warning; Try all the same type/ brand bulbs that system is based on resistance to ground, you might have some luck using conductive grease on the contacts and body of the bulb.

Your other problems might be worn out combo switch, I'd say to look at a schematic and do some checks to correctly diagnose.

for the driver door it could also just be a bad switch i have had a few of them

the brake warning light could be a bad resistor in the back I've also dealt with them....the indicator is triggered by resistance and there are 2 circuit blocks on the taillights(one on each side) that could be bad also as they send the info to the cluster

I really have a hard time getting my mind around the idea that I have 3 (and possibly 4) failures to components that route through the ICU rather than a flaky ICU. And I really don't want to go and chase down the schematics and troubleshoot 4 separate components if it's reasonable to think that the common problem is a bad ICU.

I failed to mention that I had swapped out the drivers switch for the working unit from the 5-speed with no improvement. I did say I'd done some checking on the taillight sensors but I'm not sure if I did that right. I've been hestitant to test with my other set of taillights because I didn't want to mess up the old gaskets that keep water out of the trunk.

I realize that each of my symptoms COULD be a lot of things. But in the context of the symptoms and situation I'm in, doesn't it make the most sense to test with the good ICU and if so, how does that thing detach?

I've been having extremely similiar problems with my 95 Accord. I completely agree with you that it is very unlikely that all these problems are because of seperate issues. I'm just about to order a new ICU for my car because all of my problems are controlled by the ICU.
My problems are:
-Front right side marker blinker bulb gets stuck on, even if the car is completely off and key is out.
-Rear defogger does not work.
-First click on windshield wipers does not work (but the other speeds do work).
-Headlight warning chime does not work.
-Seatbelt unbuckled with key in beeper does not work.

I have been struggling with this problem for months and each time that blinker light gets stuck on I have to disconnect the battery and reconnect it and everything is cleared up. Every couple times the car is turned on the symptoms are back. I finally realized that all the problems I've been having are controlled by the ICU, so I'm going to go ahead and change it. I would really like to hear what you come up with!

Hey All:

I had the same problems. The dealership charge me a lot of money and couldn't fix the problem. I had to take the car to an auto alarm place to re attached my alarm that the dealership had to disconnect to diagnose the problem. The auto alarm place for less than $170 discovered that two door jambs didn't work, preformed some work around wiring to get the over head doom light to work and re installed the alarm. They did all this while I watched and did the work in less than a hour. After that the only thing that still doesn't work frequently is the cigarette lighter. I still plan on getting a replacement ICU in case the current one causes more problems.
