Default 92 Auto Tranny Woes

I just bought a 92 Accord LX. The previous owner said it had transmission problems and that it needed solenoids. I ordered a set of solenoids and tested all 4 before I did anything. The shift solenoid on the transmission made a click when 12V was applied to it, but it was very faint on both sides of it. I changed out the solenoid, drove the car and it seemed fine. I came back home and took it out again an hour later. The car did fine at first and then started revving and not shifting. I made it home finally.

The next day, I pulled the TCU and found a burnt resistor. I replaced that. I got it back together last night and test drove it. It did great for about 5 minutes, then back to the revving and not shifting again. I pulled the ECU fuse and checked all my connections again this morning. I started out and everything was great. I went less that half a mile and had no forward gears. I pushed it off the road and restarted the car, it had all gears. I took it home and parked it.

I received another TCU today that was tested and in working order. I hooked it up, changed the tranny fluid, and went for a test drive. I went 3 miles and everything was great. I thought it was fixed, then suddenly the non shifting started again. I got it home, went to turn it around in the driveway and once I shifted out of reverse, I had no forward gears again. Once again a turn off and restart gave me forward gears. I pulled up, put it in reverse and parked it. I tried the gears and had no forward gears again.

Any ideas on what could be happening? I really need this car to be on the road. I have a new Main Relay and TPS to install if need be also.

I don't know what's wrong, try checking for engine and trans codes by jumping the plug. Even if there's not a CEL or S light on there may be stored codes.

If you live in Virginia i can get you a very good low mileage automatic transmission for $200. I am talking about selling my own transmission. I am going to do a 5 speed swap in a month or so and the trans I have in my car right now is a low-mileage JDM unit in very excellent running condition. I ordered mine from NJ last Fall. I won't be needing it anymore so may sell it.

Back to the subject. If you said you had burnt resistors on you TCU I would suspect there is a short somewhere in the wiring that made your new TCU burn out again. Look for wiring diagrams for the exact resistor that burnt out to find the problem in the wiring.

That's why it's best to always take care when removing parts and installing new ones..to the extent that if you have issues with new parts you can always put the old ones back on in an emergency situation. You can try pulling another tcu from the junkyard if you have access. I would pull solenoids as well if it was me.

Back probe the TPS, and watch it with a volt meter with the car turned ON. It should have a linear change in voltage, no spikes or dead spots.

However, being the transmission stops working I wonder if the sump still has sludge in it.
Try draining and refilling the transmission again, what color is the fluid that comes out?
Pull the NM and NC sensors as well. If they are coated in ferrous material then it simply may be that the trans needs a decent flushing.
Next would be to beg/borrow/steal a transmission pressure tester and hook it up to the test port. http://techauto.awardspace.com/transmission.html
