Default 91 Accord Problems

Hey guys,

I recently bought a 1991 Accord SE for commuting.

I bought it from my brother-in-law. He obtained it from a customer that ran the poor car out of oil and seized the motor. He replaced the motor with another 91 that has only 80k miles on it. Here are my questions.

1. The sport light flashes. I read in the manual that it was a tranny issue. But, could this be because the motor was just replaced?

2. My heat doesnt work. What are the possible problems for this?

3. My A/C does work... kinda... if the outside temp is 75 or below the A/C with freeze you.... If the outside temp is much higher than 75, it's barely cool to the touch.

4. The strange ticking noise. There is a strange ticking noise coming from the front of the car. not sure where. When it first started, it would only do it every few drives. now it does it every time and it's more frequent. i'll explain. When the car is moving all the sudden this kinda fast ticking noise with start, go for about 5 seconds, then quit. 9 seconds later (yes i counted lol) it does it again. Now, for the last 2 days it's done it every 7 seconds. strange right? one more thing, it will not make the noise at idle, but if you are moving and it starts and you brake to a stop while it's ticking, it will continue to tick while you're stopped (for the 5 seconds).

5. Poor gas mileage. I was surpised to find out i'm only getting about 280 to 300 miles out of a tank of gas. My 327 5.3 liter v8 chevy p/u gets almost 400 (25 gallon tank). and if you do the math they are very close. Are the older honda's gas guzzlers? or are there simple ways for me to improve my gas mileage?

Thanks for your help guys.

Update***

The ticking noise is almost constant now. about a 1 sec pause every 5 to 6 seconds.

This was your first mistake ;-)

1. The sport light flashes. I read in the manual that it was a tranny issue. But, could this be because the motor was just replaced?
This is a tranny issue, but it could have some basis in reconnecting all the transmission sensors correctly. Have him recheck his work (may have left something disconnected), and then see if you can pull a code from the TCM.

Check that the water control valve hasn't frozen up and can't operate correctly. There's a cable controlled Temperature Blend Door inside the heater case which may not be operating either. Ironically, both these are operated by the same cable so they could be related.

This will required an educated ear to locate, sorry.
Does this respond to changes in road speed? Engine RPM? Changes when you turn?

They've a reputation for being quite thrifty actually.
Try this:
Fuel filter, Air Filter, Throttle Body service and change out the O2 Sensor (They get lazy over time).

Thanks for your help guys.
