Default '90 accord failed CA. smog, need advice

car is an automatic...all stock w/over 200k miles... I knew it would fail smog but not this bad!!

any advice is appreciated! besides adjusting the timing (forward) and installing a new cat. converter....would i need to do more work, or would that be enough to pass smog??? (car is old, tryin to avoid investing too much $)

With all 3 being high I would assume it's the cat. Advancing the timing will help a little but, I think you're still gonna need a new cat. A new cat should work to fix the problem unless the engine is just worn out.

Thanks for the reply! It would be so great if just timing adjustment and a new cat. Would get the numbers low enough to pass!!

I forgot to mention/ask about the failed egr valve; could somethin else cause the egr to show "failed" I.e. if smog numbers are just so bad, its too much for the egr to work? Or is that gonna need to be replaced too? Thanks again!

You don't have an EGR, you're looking at the wrong column. The FAIL is for ignition timing.

Yes, you have an egr valve. I'm not sure why it's saying "not applicable".

I would first pull the egr plugs(or have a place that specializes in Hondas do it) and clean out the ports and egr valve and do a pretest just to see if you can save on the cat. But given how bad your results are it would appear that you are going to need to replace the cat too, but take a chance on not having to if you can.

And yeah you will need to get the timing back to specs...it needs to be 15 +- 2 degrees...but try to get it exactly at 15.

OVER 8% O2? This should be ~.1%
Only 8% CO2? This should be ~15%
This would seem its running very lean, possible misfiring which would cause high HCs... But CO% is .7... oh that's after cat, so its probably higher due to combustion issues.
Fix the timing, clean the EGR ports, verify EGR valve works, verify ignition system is up to spec. And hell sea foam the bitch with a couple of cans.

Read 'em. Learn 'em. Love 'em.

The above PDFs are from Toyota but the basic emissions systems work the same amongst applicable cars.

Your CEL light must work as that is part of the emissions test. No codes at all?

619? Damn and I thought holmesnmanny was South (bad Bay Area joke).

Yea in in s.d. (east county now) no c.e.l. car has decent power climbs hills and all that. I think I can feel a slight mis-fire at times. Thanks for the info! I got some reading to do after work today..... I was hoping I could just get a new cat. Installed and that would be enough to pass.....guess I wasn't that lucky. Thanks again tho!

Nah, installing a new cat would most likely just net you a new dead catalyst in short order. There is some running issues with your car.
What kind of mileage(MPG) are you getting.

Print out the 'h56.pdf' and go over it. Note the bold sentences they are the nuggets.
