Default 3rd brake light not working

Yes I searched but couldnt find the answers I was looking for. My brake lamp light on dash has been coming on intermittently until recently. Now the brake lamp light on dash in on non-stop. Since I noticed this change in the behavior of this "idiot light" I have now noticed that my 3rd brake light is not working. It was working previously though. Today I checked the light bulb inside the 3rd brake light housing and the bulb did not appear to be burnt out. So what could be the problem?

you may be right , but the filament didnt appear to be burnt and I inspected it closely, but I'll replace it anyway and see if that works

can anyone tell me where the fuses are for the brake lights? I pulled all the bulbs they're all fine. (dont appear to be burnt out. I clean the bulbs and sockets, but still the 3rd brake light and the passenger side brake lights do not work. The horn works though. Can anyone tell me what the problem may be besides me replacing the bulbs?

Looks like the right lide light failure sensor has gone bad. Check for power with the brakes applied at the grn/wht wire going into the sensor box (right next to the passenger brake lights) if you have power then you have your problem

if this sensor is the problem, how much are they to replace? Can I find them at any auto parts store or do I have to go to the dealer? Has anyone ever bypassed the sensor? Would it be a wise thing to do?

I had the same problem and it was due to moisture causing corrosion in the plug that is near the brake/tail light...i cleaned and applied some deox and have not had a problem since.

As was said before, replace the bulbs. All my bulbs were good until I decided to pull one out (for no reason). After a while (same day), the indicator went on. The bulb didn't work. It didn't looked burnt, but it didn't work. I flicked it a few times, and it went on (with the brake pedal pushed in of course). I flicked it a few more times, and it went out again. I ended up changing it, and now everything works. Just because a bulb looks good doesn't mean that it's actually good.

the problem isnt the bulbs , its the sensor like the guy said but apparently the sensor isnt bad, its the plug/socket...their both rusty from moisture getting onto them. Its causing a short. So I figured out the problem and know how to correct it. Thanks everyone.

I've still been having some problems with the taillights. I havent fixed the problem yet because for one, I havent had time, for two, I've been contemplating on how to go about fixing it the cheapest way possible. After thinking I diagnosed the problem, I am now beginning to second guess it. I've examined the plug several times and the reason why I believed it was a short in the beginning is because one of the pins was corroded/rusted and at times when I would move the plug in and out of the socket and I could tell the the the brake lights on the right side including the 3rd brake like would turn on and off. Also sometimes when the 3rd brake light and the one the right side are working, the brake light next to the tag doesnt want to work, but the right side on located on the quarter panel does. Then occasionally they all work perfectly. I'm still thinking that the problem is a short and I need to either splice in a new plug or somehow clean up the existing male plug somehow. I'm bumping the thread to try to get more suggestions from everyone.

My questions: Could I possibly be diagnosing the problem wrong and the brake light failure sensor may still be bad and if the brake light failure sensor may be bad, does anyone know the correct wires to splice together so I can bypass the brake like failure sensor? I usually would stuff like this the proper way, but to buy the parts brand new (sensor and plug) will probably $30 w/ shipping. That area of trunk apparently leaks so I dont wanna keep having to replace these things if they're just going to fail again pre-maturely.

If nobody thinks the brake light failure sensor is bad, would a can of electrical contact cleaner take care of the rust and corrosion that is currently on the plug? Then maybe use some electrical grease?

Has anyone found a way to splice the wires together to bypass the failure sensor? If so can anyone tell me how to do it because in all honestly I think bypassing the failure sensore would probably be the best way to go.

first of all you need to fix/ repair the rusted and corroded wires before trying to bypass anything.

lol how do you figure? What I had in mind was cutting the damn plug off and connecting the proper combination of wires together so that the functionality of the brakes lights dont depend on a stupid sensor! Dont tell me its not possible because theres millions of cars out there that are designed without this feature. lol
