Default 2001 Accord EX 4 Cyl 2.3 Vtec ULEV p1166 p1167

I went to Auto Zone and had them use their scan tool on my Honda Accord. They came up with trouble codes P1166 and P1167. I called the Honda dealership, and they said that the codes were for a faulty Oxygen Sensor before the Catalytic Converter.

I went to Auto Zone, and bought the Bosch OE type replacement for my vehicle. I disconnected the battery, and hooked it back up. The engine light is off (no codes now), but the car runs terribly. It idles fine, but as soon as I hit the accelerator there is lag. Then it goes to like 200 rpms, and run like crap.

I called Auto Zone, and they said to disconnect the battery for 30 minutes to "flash" the computer's memory. I have the terminal disconnected, however if this does not change the performance of the car, I'm putting the "faulty" one back in the vehicle, and taking the other back to Auto Zone.

Any suggestions on anything else it could be? I called a few other Honda dealerships in other states, and some say that trouble code 1166 and 1167 aren't always the O2, that they can be the maf or ia sensors. Others I call up say with an Accord presenting with 1166 and 1167, it's the o2 sensor, and that it's normal at around 100k miles for them to go out (mine has 129K).

Help would be appreciated.

I took the Auto Zone part out, because the car ran horribly and the engine light was still on. I put the Honda one back in, and the light is still on, but the car runs fine.

The Honda part being 290.17, and the Bosch replacement part being 80.00$ ish, I clearly want that part, however if it won't work, then I guess I'm stuck with the OEM part.

Ugh.

You might want to search around, I'm fairly sure there is a post in the Archives where someone found genuine Denso O2 sensors, about 1/2 the cost of the dealer costs.

Google shows 119,000 hits for "Denso O2 sensor"

The codes you have pertain to the Heater in the sensor.
Usually the 2 black wires at the sensor are the heater circuit, and they should have 12 volts with the key on.
Here's an image from a 97 Accord

When you check the wires at the sensor, do you check it inside the plug itself? So basically, the sensor is disconnected from whatever it is that the clip connects to?

I tried to search the forum earlier, and it said the search function was disabled.

I went to Advance Auto (as I planned above) and bought a 2nd Bosch "oem type" sensor. I put it in, the light went off, about 5 minutes later it was back on with the same symptoms as the first one.

With the "faulty" Honda o2 sensor installed, it runs fine. With the "new" Bosch sensors, it runs like a big 2.3 liter turd.

With some research that I've done, and talking to more people, the majority is that it has to be the o2 sensor. They said that those engine diagnostics would show the idle air controller, or the mass air flow as a problem, fi they were. My brother said if the IAC was messed up, the car's idle would be all over. He seems to think that I just have to buy the Honda part and eat the 290.17

The Denso parts, I wonder if they have a return policy for them, if I buy one and it doesn't work.

Something I wanted to try, was one from a junk yard (see if the light goes away, and car run fine). That way, I put one in, know that's what will fix it, then I wouldn't mind spending 290.17 to fix it. I pretty much don't want to spend 300$ if it "may" not fix the problem.

What year Accords use the same o2 sensor as the 01 EX 2.3 Vtech ULEV?

Looking online, it appears Denso is what comes in a Honda.

something like eBay number 150244545119 ?

Tried a 2nd one, with the same symptoms present. Though, it does take longer for the engine light to come on, with the Bosch than the Honda part.

I called up the Honda dealership and told him my problem, and he said that the Bosch parts have been known to not work. That said, the Honda part is on order and will be in tomorrow.
