2000 accord EX F23A1 my ignition problem and solution
just recently purchased my '00 accord with 146,000 on it and thought I got a great deal 1800$, 20 minute test drive, ran great; VTEC kicked in perfect and felt no issues. Drove 20 miles home, all was well.
First day driving to work, she stalled three times
three times on the way home, and then after 3 days she died. Crank no-start and I didn't hear my fuel pump kick on. Side of the road and threw in a new MAIN/Fuel pump relay (saw some heat scoring on the board and poor solder joints)- nothing, still crank no-start. towed it home and started the process air/fuel/spark. I was getting fuel but no spark, took off the dizzy cap and inspected. rotor was good contacts were good. Next step I ordered the Ignition Control Module or Ignitor (had that go out on a 93 accord 2.2) before it came in I found a junkyard Dizzy for 50 bucks and said why not. R&R the dizzy and gave it a try. Gave myself another problem in doing so, went to crank and got a super fast crank (sounded like my timing belt went) thought I messed up my timing. Turned out I forgot day-one stuff, I was in such a hurry to put the thing back together and go that I didn't think to inspect the used dizzy. Took both apart and found the junkyard one had no rotor left and contacts in cap were shot (I'm an idiot). In the dizzy that came with the car I found my problem(s), pigtail into the dizzy was cracked, melted and oil soaked, also had a junk aftermarket coil in it and the internal wiring was shot (exposed, twisted and bent) Frankensteined two into one, took the hitachi coil, wiring and pigtail out of junkyard and into original. slapped it on and then I thought TDC and timing was next. I was wrong, seems honda was nice enough to make it so this dizzy can only go on one way. reconnected my battery and she cranked right over. This forum was my go-to during this whole process and help to narrow down my diagnosis. While it may seem like common knowledge to check the internal components before throwing parts at it, I had forgotten and just thought I was a common problem. Hope this post isn't a waste of time and maybe it will help others.
