Icon2 2000 Accord Check engine light on-need help

I didn't even know this site or you guys was around. Thanks in advance....

My son's 2000 Accord has the check engine light on. It has been on for some time but now when the engine warms up the car just dies and won't restart for a while.

I hooked up a code reader and got these codes - P0401, P0450 & P0453.

I'm at wits end and don't know where to go other than the dealership.

Thanks in advance guys....

P0401 Solutions:
In fixing this code, it is quite common for people to just replace the EGR valve only to have the OBD code return. The EGR valve is not always the culprit.

* Use a vacuum pump and pull the EGR valve open while monitoring engine RPM's & DPFE voltage. There should be a noticable difference in RPM's with the EGR open
* Clean out the EGR valve and/or tubing to remove deposits
* Check the voltage at the DPFE, compare to specified values (refer to a repair manual for your specific model)
* Replace the DPFE sensor (with a good quality / OEM one)
* Replace the EGR valve

P0450 Solutions:
replacing evap sensor switch and making sure that the charcoal canister that the sensor is attached to is not damaged because that would also be a possible culprit

P0453 Solutions:
make sure the fuel cap is on tight and that it is the correct type or replace the fuel cap itself

Dogman,
could you please tell me where you plug in the Code reader? I have been trying to figure out where the Service connector is on the Accord 2000. I have a Uk RHD 2000 Accord. Is yours RHD too? Your help will be highly appreciated.

Cheers

Hey mparack,

Look ubder the dash under the left side of the steering column. Mine is just about where my left leg rubs the bottom of the dash when I'm behind the wheel.

Hope this helps......

Hi,
I have the same model accord (VTI-L) but I can't locate the socket anywhere to read the codes. I even call the NRMA, road assistance guys to do it for me but the guy spent an hour or so to locate the socket but in vain.
Can you pls suggest where to go from here?
Thanks

Another thing i noticed while driving the car is that the malfunction light comes on immediately when the engine is cold but after running it for 15 or so minutes, turning it off and on again makes the malfunction light to go away; I get the spark plugs replaced assuming they might be playing some role but no success. Any ideas?
