1999 Accord Headlights and Main Relay
Hi everyone. I have a 1999 LX coupe and I'm having problems with the headlights.
Prior to this I had been having what seems to be a very common problem with the main relay, whereby on hot days the car would not start. After looking around on the internet (this site included), I found what seemed to be the likely solution and I decided to pull it out and try to fix it myself (as I have all the soldering tools to do so). I identified some very obviously bad solder joints, so I re-soldered anything that looked remotely bad and put the main relay back in (I did disconnect the battery first).
It worked like a charm, but just last night I noticed that none of my headlights were working anymore (high beams or low beams on either side). I can't guarantee that the headlights were working immediately prior, but they were all working as far as I know fairly recently (I had not driven it at night in probably around a week).
I have checked the fuses for the left and right headlights under the hood (both visually and with a multimeter continuity test) and they are both fine. All the other lights (running, tail, break, reverse) seem to be working fine.
Does anyone know whether re-soldering the main relay or the act of removing/reinstalling it could have an effect on the headlights? I have not tried to replace the headlights yet since it seemed pretty unlikely that they would all go out at once, both high-beam and low. I know I can purchase a main-relay for 30 dollars at advanced, which I'm fine with doing. If the main relay couldn't have caused this, any suggestions on where to start? I'm having trouble tracking down decent wiring schematics.
My next idea was to start poking around to see where (if anywhere) that I am getting power (and check into the two relays in the fuse box), though I don't want to blow out my multimeter (its only rated to 10 amps, is that a problem?) Any other ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Luke

Main relay isn't connected to the headlights at all. Did you maybe pull a wire under the dash board while you were fixing the main relay?
Since you already checked the fuses, have you probed the headlight sockets to see if they have power? Only way to really find out is to check the bulbs, then start on one end of the wiring and follow it through.

As far as I know I did not pull any wires, the main relay was actually just dangling right there (not even attached to anything, which probably isn't good), so I didn't have to remove or move anything else to get to it. I will check for sure then.
I hadn't checked for power at the bulbs yet. I'm used to electronics but not with that much current so I didn't want to blow my meter or do something stupid. I'll take them off and see what I can see. I guess I can check for power at the fuses too? Is there any way to test the headlight relays that you know of?
Also, on a side note, are any of the wires that are in the drivers-side fusebox related to the headlights to anyones knowledge? I was checking around all the fuse boxes and noticed a number of cut wires and disconnected plugs in there. I can't imagine thats the problem unless someone got in my car and cut the wires very recently, which seems pretty unlikely, but I figured I would ask anyways.
Thanks for getting back to me so quick!
