Default Thinking of Buying 92' Accord

Hey fellas,

I'm thinking of buying a 92' Accord for $1,000. It has 200,000 miles on it and all I know about it is that it runs. The paint is in pretty bad shape and the interior is not far behind but I'm more concerned with reliability. My current daily driver is getting very tired and I figured if I could ****** this up, do some regular maintenance that it may need perhaps it can take over the DD role. Anything I should look out for that may stand out? I'm pretty certain a timing belt and water pump would be in order but anything else? Or should I just stay away all together since I don't know the history? Thanks for any insight.

go for it, as long as it's a 5 speed, if engine goes out just drop an h22, as long as it's not an h22a4, do an h22a or a1, visit cb7tuner.com to see what can be done to these, perfect DD and sleeper if you want to get crazy

That is actually the worst part, it's an auto. I would keep it as stock as possible. Just looking for a commuter.

The very first thing I do when I buy a car is change out the thermostat with a Honda OEM one.

Bummer about the auto. It's a good deal, and it will probably last for a good long while (mine was still going strong at 235k when I borked it), but it won't be much fun to drive.

The auto is a downer on the fun side, but if it shifts ok and doesn't slip, I would change the ATF with Honda genuine. Then do it again in 500 mi. The CB7 autos are seemingly better than the 99-03 units.
If it's an LX, replace the transmission computer with one from an EX (can be had on EBay for $70).
Mine has 259k with no problems.

92 is a great little car, the transmission computers were some trouble, however the EX and LX are not the same and one is no better than the other. changing the computer can make your car do some funny things. the automatic in it is a good one with maintance and the proper honda oil can run hundreds of thousands of miles, i ran a 93 513000 miles and it was running good when it left here. i like those models and have owned three of them

Too bad it wasnt a manual, those auto gearboxes are too sluggish and often times unreliable.

Truth is, I wouldnt pay more than 500 for that. I mean 200K miles and a 20 year old car?
