1995 accord lx overheating
i have a 1995 accord lx 5spd with a overheating problem-first i would like to mention that the thermostat and radiator cap were replace already.
Problem= car only overheats when driving in the freeway for a couple of minutes around 10-15 minutes(regular speed, avg. 70mph). an while in the street it will overheat in about 30 minutes. while waiting in a stop light, sometimes the temp gauge starts going down.
oh and the fan is working properly.
thanks.

IE:
Oil in coolant
Coolant in crankcase?
Does the engine run rough?
Do you get a lot of moisture out the tailpipe?

Re: 1995 accord lx overheating
We did a coolant flush when we change the therm. and the cap, and no contamination was found.
last week we also did an oil change, and with the same result, no contamination.
the only thing i need to do now is to check that moisture. i guess i need to do that on operating temp?
right?
thanks for the help

Sometimes when a cooling system is opened, an air pocket can form which can hinder / shut off circulation of the coolant.
If you have a set of ramps, raise the nose of the accord and refill the radiator.
If you did have air trapped, you'll be greeted with a partially empty radiator when you open the cap.
There IS a bleeder screw incorporated in the t'stat housing, but I've had questionable success using it.

One thing I would suggest would be to belch (purge) the system.

I was at pep today, and i asked one of the techs there if they can advice me with the diag. they told me that it may be possible that the radiator is plug. and the way to check this is to have the car running at operating temperature, then check the upper and lower radiator hose for difference in temp with a heat gun.
whats your opinion on this?
thank you for your help and time

Re: 1995 accord lx overheating
you have air in your system
run the car with the rad cap off with heater control set to max and run it until you see no bubbles for at least 10 min (its ok if coolant spills)

Re: 1995 accord lx overheating
If you use the bleeder method, open the bleeder a few turns and maybe stuff a few paper towels below it to catch the coolent. Fill the radiator untill you see coolent spraying out the bleeder, it will be bubbling, keep adding coolent until it stops bubbling and while coolent is running out shut the bleeder by tightening it back up...
That should get most of the air, but like mentioned you still have the radiator to worry about... squeezing the top radiator hose will help burp the system. I have heard that auto zone will rent you a tool that aids in burping the radiator as well?
Good luck!
