02 accord rear wheel bearing
doing the 5 lug / disc brake conversion on my 02 accord. I have all the parts and I am replacing the bearings. I think I pretty well understand the front bearings but I am confused on the rear. I separated the hub from the spindle, it looks like the hub/wheel bearing are sold as a unit, can the hub be reused and the wheel bearing replaced? I have a press and was hoping I could save some money.

First I don't think you can only replace the bearing on those rear hubs.
And even if you could, it would most likely not be any cheaper and probably not worth the effort. Can pickup rear hubs for ~$30 a pop.

Yeah i tried it and def wasted my time, just broke pieces of the bearing off. Now that failed I am more curious than wanting to try and press it out.

Re: 02 accord rear wheel bearing
the inner rings will press out of the hub (which is really a flanged outer ring as opposed to the traditional hub design) but the raceways are built into the flanged part as one piece. the hub flange is the bearing

You rock, love that feeling of closure. Yeah I busted one of my press discs and nearly broke every window in my sun room when the ball bearings shot out from the hub. After I looked at I couldn't see that it could be pressed out because of the flange and shape, just figured it was ignorance / user error.

Re: 02 accord rear wheel bearing
Going to bump this thread with another question related.
Next, the question, I need to get the front wheel bearings out, no problem I have a press.
The problem is I cant get the press plates any where solid because of the dust shield, how do you get the shield off so I can press the hubs out?
I see 3 screws, which I am sure are totally rusted solid, but I have no access to them because they are behind hub.

No bolts on the 6th gen, just the hub, bearing and knuckle. I think the bolts were on the 5th gen and maybe some civics?

Re: 02 accord rear wheel bearing
You are right. I didn't read the 02 part. Yes they are pressed in. I thought once about using the Gen 6 axels on my Gen 5 and bought a knuckle at the salvage yard just to see. I think it would have worked but it was pointless to change them. As to the screws, an 90 degree screw driver and some solvent or penetrating oil might work. If all else fails, you could cut the heads of the screws off with a chisel then drill and re-thread when you get the bearing out.

Initially I wasnt going to replace them, seeing as how they are really messed up from me hammering, pressing, etc... but I am concerned about debris getting into the rotor / pads etc... Is that a valid concern or just leave them off? If I keep them I will replace the screws with bolts and modify them so they can come off with the hub on, likely cutting them in to pieces.

Re: 02 accord rear wheel bearing
There are various opinions on whether to keep them or not. I have always kept mine even when I went to bigger rotors. I haven't had any problems doing that. I run 300 mm rotors on the front and 313 mm rotors on the rear. So unless you run into some reason why it won't work for you, then I would say keep them.

Re: 02 accord rear wheel bearing
No progress yet. Wife got laid off from work about 4 weeks ago so I haven't been able to buy anything. Fortunately she got at least a part time job so work can progress. I am bumping this thread with a related question or two.
OEM bushings, I have seem them all over, but do they make a kit, or am I going to have to buy each one I want to replace individually?
I noticed on the rear hubs when I was pressing out the old bushings there didn't seem to be any thing preventing the bushings coming out one side, meaning when I go to press in new bushings, how will I know they are in the right position? I was going to press them in until they were lose to equal on both sides but that didn't seem very accurate. Any ideas? Let me know if needs pics.

Re: 02 accord rear wheel bearing
Bumping.
So far the answer is no kits, with some suggestions for poly bushings from ES using a civic kit, def looking for oem rubber for the comfy ride.
To elaborate on the pressing issue, the front wont be a problem because the wheel bearing and ball joints run against the knuckle, however, on the rear knuckle the bushings dont seem to have anything they back against. See pics.
There is a metal half dome that sticks up above the knuckle.
