If it's just small chips, you'll be fine. It's when the chips spread into cracks across the windshield is when you won't pass inspection. Sorry, I don't of any ways to prevent chips from spreading into cracks.

A buddy of mine installs windshields. He said as long as it doesn't start cracking, you're alright.

Take it to place that installs windshields and they can inject it with this stuff that seals it up and makes it so you can't even notice the crack.

A tip to keep it from cracking. Roll your windows down a little bit when the car is sitting out in the sun on hot days. I did this with my beater and the crack hasn't grown at all.

hey all great info, thanks alot, i called the glass shop and the guy gave me some more tips, he said that if the car has been sitting in the sun dont wash it. let it cool down first, and also keep the defroster off of it in the winter, thanks to all the helped out.

Not sure about your ins company but I know a lot of them in PA will pay to have your windshield fixed where they inject the stuff into it. They do this b/c it is very cheap and they do not have to shell out for a new windshield. Just call a glass place and find out if they can do it or recommend someone that can. We got a chip in the windshield of the street rod and got it fixed and you can not even see where it was chipped. Click the image to open in full size.
