Default What causes oil to come out of the exhaust?

This isn't really Honda related so that's why I'm posting it here. It's a 94 Nissan Sentra. Anyway, when you let it idle it smokes a little but not too bad. A bit of some comes out when you give it gas. However, I noticed when it was just idling I put my hand behind the exhaust and it got misted with oil. What's causing this? Is it the valves or something else?

My mother had a old Dodge truck like this she ran for years and just kept adding oil. Is this the normal or is it something that's likely to blow up next week?

Basically a friend is looking at buy this as they need a cheap car and this thing is $600. It has this issue, the paint is faded, and the power seatbelt on the drivers side is broken. The top power piece is like it slides freely it's not hooked onto the motor or whatever it's supposed to be hooked onto. Any idea how much that would cost to fix? I'm thinking the seatbelt has to be fixed but the rest you could just drive it until it broke. It seems decent to me for $600 as that doesn't get you much in todays world. However, they also don't want something that will only last them a week if that.

Valve stem seal leakage (bad) can cause this, as can cracks in the head near the exhaust manifold. Are you sure it's oil and not water mixed with carbon soot from the normal exhaust emissions? Does it burn a lot of oil as well?

could be carbon that is being carried out with the condensation at idle...

are you sure its oil? if you get oil smoke under acceleration its piston rings. if you get smoke under decel or idle (manifold vacuum) its valve seals. if it smokes like its on fire... well its probably a ford

it's a 600 dollar car. get the seatbelt issue fixed and add oil when needed. it probably burns enough that it isn't even worth doing an oil change. when it needs a repair, you get rid of it. it should last a year or so. a good price for a car to drive for one year.

Maybe it is carbon and water. It seemed watery but looked sort of like oil. Not 100% sure here though. It did smoke some too which is what made me think it's oil.

Valve seals - Most common.
Bad PCV Valve.
Bad piston rings
Incorrect vacuum routing.

Okay - so it's not oil, it's just the normal carbon/water mixture that comes out of all exhausts. If there's an excessive amount of it, it's a general indication of head gasket damage.

Did you think to ask the owner of the car if it burned or lost oil? That would have been a pretty logical first step, don't you think?

Well, the owner of the car is a junkyard. So not like I got to talk to whoever last drove it. They junkyard is actually still waiting for the title before they can sell it which makes me think they just got it. I've never seen an exhaust do that before other than my mothers old truck which like I said burned oil.

This car did smoke some so you could tell it probably burns oil.

so basically, they get an abandoned car and put a storage lien on it and because they toss a half lit battery in it and it happens to have keys....they attempt to crank it..and voila it runs/drives when put in gear.

wow.

other than that, they have NO FUGGIN CLUE on the history or why its abandoned and you are broke as hell and see "ooooo cheap transport" that bitch will leave you on the side of the road just like the previous abandonment owner did.

save your $600, catch the bus a few more weeks....and save up and buy a decent $1500 beater man.
