However, police said, the man mistakenly used a real rifle in the prank.

Nicholas Bell, 23, was charged with manslaughter after the incident Thursday, Manchester police said.

"The accused fired the weapon, which was a loaded .22 cal rifle hitting the [victim] in the chest," a police statement said. "The victim died at the scene."

The victim was identified as 24-year-old Jeffrey Charbonneau.

Both men were guests at the Manchester home where the shooting occurred, police said.

Bell was jailed and bail was set at $250,000.

That's EXACTLY what I was thinking. The day of or after Thanksgiving with Christmas on the way.

What I don't understand is.....He said he was going to prank him by waking him up with a gun? Who does this by firing into someone's chest? Nevermind that nobody does this but why wouldn't he fire it into the ground or air? I guess I can't expect stupid people to think that critically though. Just sucks the dumbass survived and killed his friend.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. Why not just point it at the ceiling¿

It almost seems fishy to me. Like you said though. People are stupid and they will always do stupid things.

At the age of 24 too. You would think at that age you would have enough common sense to look at the gun to see if it is real and if it is to make sure its not loaded. Even then he shouldnt have pointed a gun at someone else. This is what ignorant 8 year olds do, not adults

Bell was jailed and bail was set at $250,000.

Had to read that a few times, kept seeing "Bail was jailed and bell was set..."

WTF is wrong with people these days? There isnt a single part of that whole ordeal that makes any sense. Why wake someone up by scaring them with a gun? Why do this with any gun before checking to see if its an air rifle or real gun? Why fire it before checking to see if its loaded? Why point the gun at the guys chest when you fire it? Fail is prevelant throughout that whole plan, and i honestly hope the dude rots in jail for the rest of his life for it. This kids life was cut short by some douche canoe who doesnt have a lick of sense

Reminds me of when Al woke Jimmy up by firing his pistol next to his head in Boardwalk Empire.. only this has a lot more fail involved.

I would guess that it was actually pretty quick. To die at the scene from a .22 chances are the heart or a major artery was pierced and he went quickly.

Most people will probably hate but I also feel bad for the shooter. While it's an extreme case of "WTF were you thinking?" I know there are a lot of situations we put ourselves in when we were kids that could have gone so wrong if one small detail had changed.

This guy probably thought he was going to start the day with a joke that they could talk about on holidays to come for years and now has to live with the fact that he killed his friend.

high quality air soft guns are often almost completely identical to their real firearm counterparts on the outside. This has actually got some folks in trouble with assault weapons charges because airsoft "m16s" use a lower receiver which is so close to military grade m16, that some could be converted. no joke.

This happened to my uncle when he was 11 or so. Shotgun tothe chest because some neighbor kids put a 12ga in with toy guns as a prank. He lived and eventually became a special forces soldier.

???? Shot in the chest with a 12 ga and lived? Is your uncle one of those guys that seems to have a story for every occasion? Gonna need a little more detail in that story.

That's all I know. Family doesn't say much about it. I can ask more details I suppose. There were seven ? people in the house at the time and I've talked to numerous witnesses (family) about it. Maybe I have the 12 ga part wrong? I'll ask for more details and GE back to ya.
