Default toilet repair vs replacement - are toilet tanks universal?

hey guys

I know there's some do-it-yourselfers as well as homeowners on H-T so i need to ask,

I broke my toilet tank (it cracked & broke, and spilled all the water out) but the bottom half of the toilet is OK.

Are toilet tanks universal?? I saw toilet tanks for sale at home depot but there was nobody working the aisle to help me out.

Or should I just be looking at new toilets?

Any toilet suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

I paid $120 for a complete Koehler low flow with a flush rating of 10.

Best investment ever.

whats funny is every single toilet at home depot supposedly has a flush rating of 10. Are you OK with the low flow? It flushes big solids?

No toilets are not universal. I'm a plumber so I know :D Any tank should fit your bowl but you may have to adjust where it hangs on the wall and you may have to cut the supply line to the toilet bowl itself.

My oldest son clogged my 1940s high flow toilet every single time. Since the replacement, he may clog it once a month. The boy is only six and quite often sinks a battle ship that breaches the surface of the water from the depths of the hole.

They are not all rated a 10.

I agree that the old ones do where they simply redesigned the tank and did nothing to the seat.

My buddy just got one that has 2 flushing options

2 BUTTONS TO PUSH

yeah the 2 button toilet is popular in europe.

and for H-T comedy purposes, I will tell you that for the past 3 weeks, I have been shitting in a broken toilet (the tank completely fell apart, so all that's left is the bottom half) and using a bucket of water to flush it.

Some tanks use 2 mounting bolts, and some use 3.

They aren't universal, you would have to match up the model and style. Buy a new one.

<- plumbs in the summer, use to full time.

Just replaced one in an extra bathroom that was cracked. I paid 65 dollars for a brand new one at home depot (cheapest they had). It includes everything down to the wax ring. It does the job.

Let me slide this one in. Are there difference type of toilet surfaces? I'm not talking about scratches in the bowl, or rim stains. My OEM toilets that came with the house seem to stick a lot easier than the old ones. These surfaces just don't seem to be that smooth or slick.

Do they just not make them like they used to? Or are there different type of surfaces? Some are slicker than others?

Buy a new one and think of it as an investment.

For the most part they are always porcelian or ceramic. Seats can be plastic though. You never want to have to poop on a stainless steel toilet.

I'd get a new toilet, but when you go to Home Depot lookin for one, you're probably going to look at the toilet that has the flush button on the top of the tank. It's the two button kind that's supposed to save water. DON'T GET THAT ONE! It's the most expensive toilet they've got and when anything breaks in it, you can't find replacement parts because all the repair kits are for single flush side lever toilets. I had four of them in my old house and two of them were broke because they would no longer flush poo, only pee. I was directed to the manufacturer for a repair kit, but I never bothered because when there's two people in a house with four toilets, it's not that big of a problem.

I was terrified by one of those in a hotel room. All of the instructions were in Kanji too.

@GoLowDrew: Drop some Rain-X in there.

well i splurged and got the Kohler Highline Classic. It was $200 + $99 installation.

It's got the comfort height and elongated bowl.

Installer should be calling me on monday and i'll post further updates as soon as I take a crap in it.
