Default Is it safe to buy a car from an auto auction

My co-workers friend is a car dealer and he goes to auctions and buys cars and resells them. He is scoping out a car for me but I am kind of iffy about it now because I'm worried about if it's been in a crash or has a bad title. Do they show full history to the buyer? Comments?

If you can get the VIN do a carfax check and see if it's been listed in any accidents...typically if something is at an auto auction (police auctions anyway are all I've really heard of) it's a theft recovery, or it was left in impound...or it was taken by the police.

At some auctions they let you go out and test drive them.

I went to one to check out a 240SX that was being on auction. 1993 Red Fastback 5spd (of course).. with 103K miles pretty CLEAN, no rust, nothing wrong. it drove fine too.

So go try that out.. And of course as said above do a VIN check.

The thing that sucks, is that when you try to buy it on the spot instead of waiting for the auction, they will keep the price high like mother ******* (at least in my case)

That fastback they had.. I told them I wouldn't give them more than $2800
And they said they "Called the bank (BS)" and said they can't take less than $4200..
RIDICULOUS

Then we talked for a while.. and They brought it down to $3750. STILL RIDICULOUS!

Anyways, keep in mind that if you try to buy it on the spot, they have no pressure to sell..

Good Luck Click the image to open in full size.

ooooh ****...
we ahd some **** from an auction car today
We bought this Mr2 from the auction for parts on a motor swap we were doing.
Anyways from the front of the rear tires forward the car was leveled like it had run under an 18 wheeler doing about 100
Anyways a buddy was taking out the seat brushing through some **** in **** when he found a set of human teeth, SOmeone's upper jaw was on the seat.
We called the police and they sent out forensics, turns out it was a fatality accident in waco...
Now our shop is haunted.......

Well, the guy is going to buy it at the auction with intention of selling it to me afterwards, I won't be at the auction. So basically it's going to be a surprise as to what condition and what carfax will show me. I may tell him nevermind and buy one privately. He did get my co-worker a truck thats in perfect shape.

Sometimes not even that.. My friend was in an accident that did like 5k damage to the other car and like 3k to his and it was reported to police and insurance but it never showed up on carfax.

I don't trust most auction cars. My grandpa used to go to a LOT of them and check out the cars. I ended up buying a Saab convertable about 4 years ago (yeah I know) and it turned out to be the worst pos ever, even worse off than most Saabs. He HAS bought my mom several Sables over the years, so I guess it just depends on the makes and whats popular. I wouldn't go for the high dollar cars like the beemers and porshes...if the cars are there at an action, its usually because they were either repo'd or were damaged enough NOT to be on a dealership lot somewhere.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. I'll probably call the guy tonight and tell him nevermind. A honda dealership called yesterday and told me they have an 01' S2000 in silver with 30k for 22k certified with warranty. I did want red but silver was my second choice. Plus having the peace of mind knowing honda is backing me on it.

If it's possible you should register a unlimited CARFAX account and while your at the auction have a friend or someone on call for you to run the VIN numbers.

I just talked to him, he told me they are all carfax'd so you can see the history before you buy it. He also said that if there is unreported damage or anything that carfax didn't find, you can bring it back to whoever you bought it from.

I had my car bought at auction. Overall I was happy with my experience. They only hard part in my case was that I never saw that car before it was sold to me. But the guy who got it for me inspected it and ran a carfax, etc. In the end Id definatly do it again; it saved me around 1750 off blue book.

depends what aution.
Privite, Pubic, Dealer, Etc.
The auctions my dad has been too had full reports on cars.

Just remember, a car can have a clean history report and been in a minior acident. Most of these "minor" acidents are never listed in reporst such as carfax, title, etc.

If you're familar with cars and know how they're put together and can estimate damage correctly. You can probably tell a good deal from a dead deal. My friends take me with them when they buy used cars. I can see things they can't Click the image to open in full size.

You know, a lot of off-lease, and regular trade in cars are sold back at auction to dealers...
