Last time I recall, CA is NOT a Right to Work state.

But then there are common practices. So they did this. What are you going to do? Get a lawyer? No. They know that. You quit. You are history. Done. So what?
im not mad and never said im going to lawyer up. I just never encountered this before. The last 2 companies gave notice let me stay the full 2 weeks.

ease up.

Real classy of them. You give them 2 weeks notice as a courtesy, and they basically tell you to go fvck yourself by giving you the hatchet. lolz

If they found someone else they're not gonna pay two people to do a job they only need one person for. sometimes i've put in a two weeks and them just tell me not to come back again. lol!

Haha, same thing happened to me about a month ago. I got a job offer and gave my then-current employed the 2 week courtesy, which he took. 3 days later, he walks in saying how "he has to let me go, I want somebody that wants to be here, there's no point, yadda yadda"

In my mind I was like, "wow, even better. I get to quit with honor and this ******* doesn't even take the two weeks. Awesome." I chalk it down to him feeling bitter. He treated me like a piece of ****, telling me I'm nothing. Then I get an unsolicited offer with higher pay, in a higher position with people that I worked with before (and liked).

Winning.

EDIT - It also goes down as quitting if they choose not to take your 2 weeks.

I knew a few people at my job who found other positions with different companies and they gave their 2 weeks notice. They were terminated the SAME day...cant get any more ****ed up than that.

i've had that happen, granted it was a part time job at denny's but if you're quiting i wouldnt really expect them to be happy and keep giving you hours. might as well adjust to not having you. lol

i don't understand this mindset. they have a business to run and found someone to fill the shoes of the guy quitting. they won't pay BOTH to work there, and why make a new employee wait two weeks, when they can get him up and trained/comfortable right away?

You gave them the courtesy, and they took that courtesy and used it.

Plus, I've known so many dbags who essentially do jack **** once their two weeks is in (not saying OP is) it's an overall win/win for the company, and a break even for the ex employee, IMO

but is still better than doing a " No show No call " or very last minute quit.

TIL. 2 weeks notice is just a proffesional way to say " I quit now but i can hang for 14 more days if you need me to. "

Exactly. The fastest way to burn a bridge is to basically drop all your **** and say, "I quit" and walk out. The world is too small nowadays and that kind of incident will rear its ugly head eventually, and probably at the worst possible moment.

Sorry for my sarcastic reply. It was not directed at you. I used it to make a point that they don't care at all.

Where are people getting these "if you're terminated you are obligated to get UE." kind of deal?

If you were wrongfully terminated or terminated due to reasons "not of your fault (i.e. economy sucks) then you would get UE. Now if you were stealing and get fired - you're not getting diddly. Or if you were already QUITTING - I doubt if the state will say you deserve diddly either.

BTW I live near Costa Mesa - it's a meh place. Kinda boring. Did you move near South Coast Plaza?

Check your local laws, but that isn't legal here, if you give your two weeks notice and are paid weekly they're required to pay you for a week even if they told you not to show up, if you're paid bi-weekly they're required to pay you for 2 weeks even if they told you not to show up. However like I said check to see what the laws are in your area, they may be different.

What type of work were you doing? [edit] Salaried or by-the-hour?

At most tech companies around here, your two-week notice gets you an HR rep to help clean out your desk, and a security escort out the door. Then you get paid for two weeks of ***-sitting.

Retail? I wouldn't expect another two weeks on the schedule.

Sucks that you tried to do the right thing and you get f'kd over. Florida is an at will state meaning they can fire you for any reason without explanation however, you would still be eligible for unemployment as long as it's not for misconduct.

I gave my two weeks notice at a previous job and they basically told me not to come in the next day. I was granted unemployment because technically I was willing to work for the next two weeks and they basically terminated me.
