Default How much will/can a dealer come down from sticker price?

I will be be getting a new in the next week or so. I am trying to decide between a Camry or a Pilot.(This might change but right now its these two.)
I am thinking about getting one new from the dealer. I have never bought a new car and dont know the ins and outs. You always hear about people "talking them down" on the price. Will most dealers come down from the sticker price?

Rent the movie "Suckers" before going to any dealership and be sure to watch the special features as well. The movie may seem like it's exaggerated for effect but it hits very close to the truth in a lot of ways.

Have an understanding of MSRP and the actual value as listed by a few reputable online car sites.

Check your FICO so you understand your credit rating for your interest rate. This will help you wheel and deal assuming you have good credit.

Do some research going in and you'll be fine. If something sounds fishy, counter. If they counter back with something else, let them know you will take your "qualified" business elsewhere. You'd be surprised how quick they will "talk to their manager" to get the deal worked out.

Be smart, don't make an impulse decision. Be in control of the conversation and don't show weakness. They are there to EARN your business, you don't owe them anything.

Don't worry about "hurting" anybody's feelings. It's their job to take as much money from you as possible. It's yours to keep as much of your money as possible.

When I bought my Element I actually had two dealers talking to each other on my phone. Because as I was talking numbers with one another dealer from a different dealership called me up and asked me if I was going to come up to take a look at the car I had been asking about. When I told him that I was in fact at another dealership and they were offering me a better deal the bidding war started.

After him calling me back a few times and me having to step out away from the one dealer's desk I finally just handed the phone to the guy and said "here, you guys talk it over". Click the image to open in full size.

I ended up walking away with a Kiwi green Element from dealer #2 for $23K out the door with a roof rack, wheel locks, extra floor mats and splash guards. Click the image to open in full size.

If you can figure out the invoice of a given car the best rule of thumb is 15% over invoice.

You do this because as sleezy as you may think salesmen are, they still have mouths to feed too. 15% over invoice will ensure the salesman gets a nice cut and you get a nice price not even near MSRP.

And I second that the camry is crap. They gave me one as a rental when I dropped the Element off to get the roof rack put on. What a POS.

Honestly, if I was you, I'd throw the Element into the list of cars to chose from. Go drive one while you're looking at the Pilot.

My friend is a car salesman and his advice has been to shoot for $1,500 below invoice. If they can get you under the invoice at all, take it.

That's a little simple, but shows that dealers can and will sell cars under invoice. They don't actually pay that price.

go in and check out the car in the middle of the month, go back for the kill at the very very end of the month.

you don't really have much to bargain if you have no cash on your side but if you have a good amount of green or if you have the whole cheese you'll be surprise how much they will take it.

the name of the game is low ball, they will give you something very high to see how much you can bite. Don't be scare to return a low offer, people tense to feed stupid or look cheap to return a low offer but we all know the saying, whoever name the price first lose.

when miss7head brought her beetle at the dealer, we offer the salesman 50buck more than my original low ball offer, and at the end he took the bait. does it looks cheap for returning an offer for 50 bucks more? yeah, but you'll be enjoying your new car with more cash in your pocket.

I drove the Camry and the interior is definitely designed for old people. The buttons are huge, and the lettering is huge, and they're ALL very well lit.

edmunds recommends 300dollars over invoice. But it also depends on the car you are gonna buy. My car was very unpopular and was able to buy for 2k under invoice.

What's the length of your term?

$500/month for a Fit is crazy in my opinion (unless your term is something like 24 months Click the image to open in full size.).

Bump for going to a dealership tomorrow morning, trying to work out a decent deal on a car that is already lower than market value due to the new generation just being released, with a market inundated with new car trade-ins. Here's the low down. Said car is a 2005 Honda Accord v6 6 speed with 45k, black/black. Pictures show it to be in atleast good condition. Trade in value of said car is 13k, but retail value is 18,900. Will I have plenty of leverage, especially knowing by looking at the carfax report that it's been sitting at that dealership for over a month now? They're asking 15,900 for it, I want to get them down to 15k OTD. With a 6% rate for the loan, since I already told them over the phone I have been pre approved for a credit union at 6.5%. There are other Accords in the vicinity with similar miles for a little less than 15,900, and I'll make sure to make note of that. Will dealerships price match, or anything like that? Because there is a nearly identical(same year, color, options, 2k miles difference, looks like similar condition) car for sale considerably farther away for 13,900 that I could use. That price just dropped from 14,900 yesterday, suggesting that these cars aren't selling very well right now.

I overheard a salesman talking to another salesman on a sale of an '08 LS460. He said he "made $10,000"

I'm pretty f'ing sure that they were completely serious and open thinking no one else was in the room.

Decide what car you want with which options and then find out the invoice price of said car (what the dealer paid for it).

If the car is under $20k, offer them $500 over invoice.
If the car is over $20k, offer them $1000 over invoice.

If they don't take it, then walk away and go to the next dealer.

go to http://www.carsdirect.com get a quote print it out and bring it to the dealer. thats how my dad has bought each one of his cars and they have all been pretty close or under invoice. carsdirect is probably one of the cheapest places to find a brand new car.
