Technically? Forever.

As long as you timely pay your fees, you're "in limbo" (DMV lingo). Your car is registered and you accrue no penalties. However, you won't get the sticker until the smog process is completed. Thus, you can take the entire year if you want... You'll be in limbo until the smog is done.

So does that mean I can not have it smogged, but if I get pulled over and checked by police it'll say that I'm registered?

you wont be registered. you are just avoiding late fees until they receive the electronic smog certificate.

If you're in limbo, you shouldn't be driving. You're not registered and have no sticker, which will basically make you a cop magnet. Instead, you fall under a category called "fees on deposit". Once the smog is done, that deposit is shifted to make your registration current.

<-- Not a DMV employee but am spouting off crap I've picked up over the years .

you wont pay penalty fees if you pay for your registration but u wont be able to drive the car until u get ur tags. if you drive around like that, you will get pulled over and u will get a ticket guaranteed.

........ and they will not give you stickers until you show proof of insurance.

Best of luck.

There is no late fees for not registering your vehicle, but you can't drive it, the cops will pull you over if you don't have the correct stickers. You can't register a vehicle in Cali if you have outstanding parking tickets, no smog certification, and no insurance.
