Default Honda S2000 or Mazda Miata - today?

This is what $20,000 buys you today.

Examples:

2004 Honda S2000 65K miles.

2011 Mazda Miata 5K miles.

If you had to choose between the two, which would you choose? I not asking which car is "better." I'm asking which would you want to own, considering you will own this car for the next 10-15 years. Include all cost of ownership + fun factor + pride of ownership.

This is a question between these two cars only.

TIA

S2000. I've never liked the miata/mx-5.

$20k for a 65k mile s2k sounds high though.

2004 S2000 w/70k miles AND a 1994 1.8L Miata w/110k miles.

Never been in the latest gen Miata, but I'm not a fan of the looks, so I wouldn't be interesting in owning one.

Yes, sure, it's not the lowest. Both prices are from a dealer so they come with warranty, prep, etc, etc. This is not a price question, more like "old" car vs "new(er)" car. There is no doubt I would want a 2011 S2000, but there is none. Even if there was, it would be like $30K, and way out of my price range. Yes, all S2000 seems overpriced, so I don't know.... Where as an used Miata is what you expect a used car to be priced at.

Damn, just a few years ago a mint s2k could be had for 16k with a mere twenty thousand miles.

S2000 without a doubt. I might look around before committing though. Even from the dealer that price seems a tad high.

Get the car you want and DONT just settle. Sounds like you really want the s2k. I dont think you'll be happy with the miata unless all you want a super light canyon warrior.

The s2000 is beaitiful, decently quick, and loves to rev. The miata isnt/doesnt.

S2000. As much as I love the feel and interior of the NC Miatas more, can't get over the exterior looks.

S2K. You see Miatas around all the time, but not very many S's. Plus as soon as you pull up in a Miata, everyone expects you to be an AutoXer.

I see about the same number of newer Miatas and S2ks in OC. Definitely more older miatas in total but i chalk that up to being produced for twice as long.

It really depends on what you want to do with the car.

Now let's add this part in. For those who know me well, the limit of my automotive maintenance skills are oil change, AFT drain (s2K is manual) & fill and tire rotation. That's all I do, and that's all I know. So anything else would cost $$$$$, as it's beyond my DIY abilities.

So would a "newer" car be better for me? or something like a S2000 in the 70K miles range on the clock?

Mint S2000 (like 2008-09) is out of the question because of price, best price or not.

I haven't owned as s2k so I cant speak to the maintenance costs, but there isn't a whole lot there to go wrong. I imagine reliability between the Miata and S2k would be comparable; though I have heard some earlier s2k's have rear diff issues.

Let me slide this question in too. If I was talking about a Toyota Solara convertible, we will need to talk about body flex. I've driven one and can feel it.

Why is it that we don't talk about body flex on a Miata or S2000? Is it because they are "super stiff?" Or because they were design as a rag top (therefore super stiff) to start rather than a chop top?

I see about the same, plus when you pull up in a Miata, I think most people will think you're a hairdresser not an AutoXer .

The s2000 is beaitiful, decently quick, and loves to rev. The miata isnt/doesnt.
The 09-12 MX5 (NC2) revs to 7500rpms. It also has a lot of forged internals and does 0-60 in 6.3 seconds and 1/4 mile in 14.9 seconds. (this is the non-PRHT version). You might want to check your information/assumptions again.

http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/...x_5_miata.html

It also comes with a factory LSD and 6-speed, if optioned correctly.

Looks aside, the NC2 is a great car. It is also still being made and if you look around, you can get extremely low financing on a new car. So, the options are now:

1) Out of warranty possibly beat-on S2K
2) Brand new MX5 with full warranty and known history

The MX5 is also lighter and has a lot of aluminum on it (hood, control arms, etc).

It's a nice little car. Too bad a lot of you are too insecure to get past the "miata" nomenclature and stereotypes.
