Default Hit and run w/only liability coverage = ?

Usually, I'm pretty well versed with how auto insurance works, however today I was stumped.

My friend's car was hit in the parking lot of a housing development overnight. The front passenger corner was pretty damaged. Naturally, there was no note or evidence as to what happened. This friend only has the basic liability coverage on a 200X BMW 325i (E46 body style).

Anyway, from what I *thought*, liability is required so you are covered if you hit SOMEONE else. If someone were to vandalize your car, an animal were to hit it, etc, you would be covered under the comprehensive umbrella. What happens in a hit-and-run situation? She called Geico and they said there's nothing they can do. My research online (as well as my own insurance company) says that comprehensive should cover it if the situation was not her fault.

What should she do? Get a police report showing that it was a hit-and-run/not her fault? I find it hard to believe that having liability only (which covers you when you hit something) would not cover this. It's pretty closely related to vandalism, right?

Thanks for the help.

dude without comprehensive coverage there is ZERO hit and run coverage

Liability only means property damage and injury liability only - for the other person.

your friend is screwed.

"Liability Only" coverage means that your insurance only pays for other people's stuff when you are at fault. That is why it is required by law. Nobody gives a F**** whether or not you insure your own assets.

Comprehensive pretty much only covers you hitting someone.

Your friend probably isn't going to get anything from his insurance company.

I thought "comprehensive" is what you get normally with any "package" of insurance, even if it's liability only.

No, "comprehensive" is an optional and not legally mandated insurance that will protect your own personal assets against these types of things. So liability only means no "comprehensive" at all for yourself and collision coverage only for the other driver if you are at fault.

maybe (but unlikely) there were security cameras? Also given that it was a residential community and not retail, I would bet that one of the neighbors know who it is.

Doubtful on the security cameras. I told her to keep an eye out for cars with damage nearby. It's a relatively secluded area. If you were there, you live there....unless you were visiting, then she's screwed.

Good luck, someone hit my Prelude's bumper and scratched it up at the mall. There was a guy in the car in front on me when I pulled in and when I left...he said he just heard my alarm go off and didn't see anything. Insurance covered nothing.

P.s. pics of the girl?

Comprehensive does not cover a hit and run. You need collision or uninsured motorist property damage liability.

Comprehensive covers nature related, fire & vandalism/theft damages.

No good pics really. Dated her for a very short time. Very nice/sweet girl. I feel bad about all this.

You are wrong.

It depends on your state. I had liability only on my BMW when it was hit while parked in front of my house. Hit & run, and the car was totaled (it was actually fine to drive, no frame damage, etc...). I was covered by the Maryland uninsured motorist fund, and got a check for the NADA value. You need to have a police report filed though. Did your friend call the cops?

I've heard the same for uninsured motorist coverage that if you're a cyclist and get hit, and it's a hit and run situation, you are covered.

On my policy it's about a 5 dollar add-on, so why not right?

Yep. Liability = bodily injury and property damage.

LIABILITY COVERAGE (LIABILTY)
BODILY INJURY LIABILITY (BI):
Covers other people's bodily injuries or death for which you are responsible. It also provides for a legal defense if another party in the accident files a lawsuit against you.

PROPERTY DAMAGE LIABILITY (PD):
Covers you if your car damages someone else's property.

If you have liability only, you're only covering the damage you do.

http://www.carinsurance.com/CoverageDefinitions.aspx

COLLISION COVERAGE (COLL):
Covers damage to your car when your car hits, or is hit by, another vehicle, or other object.

COMPREHENSIVE COVERAGE (OTHER THAN COLLISION, OTC, COMP):
Covers your vehicle, and other vehicles (in limited scenarios) you may be driving for losses resulting from incidents other than collision.

For Hit and Runs though, you'll want Un/underinsured property damage.

<-- IT guy for insurance company so I had to learn all the rules of insurance coverages.

Generally it's a good idea to have only liability on a cheap car, you know, like a $2000 Civic or something like that... not an E46 BMW.

Liability with Uninsured motorist would have covered it.. But without Uninsured motorist there is nothing they can do. Even with full coverage they use your uninsured motorist coverage to take care of the accident normally.
