Default Got a piece of metal in my eye, what to do

I got a considerably large piece of metal stuck in my eye today a work. It's not the first time this has happened, but it is the first time it's been in the pupil. After having my friend try to get it out with a dab of toilet paper, the only thing that worked was a strong magnet. Again, I've done that before and it worked fine. (I've even had a Dr. take metal out with a magnet) So I never thought twice about it. I didn't fill out an accident report and go to the doctor because I didn't think it was anything else than a scratched eyelid and some discomfort.

Well, the metal piece was stuck between the Iris and the pupil. I've only had it stuck in the sclera before. (white part) Right now, and since the metal came out, I have very bad blurred vision out of that eye. If the problem is the same (or worse) tomorrow I'll go to the doctor.

But for now, has anyone had this happen?
Am I doing damage now by not having a patch on?
Think there will be any kind of permanent damage?

Do you wear safety goggles or anything of the sort at where you work?

Take care of your eyes!

I had a corneal abrasion and recovered just fine from that. Someone's finger was the culprit in that case.

you could have scratched something you doofus.

you'd do well to go to a real eye doc (see opthamologist)

if it was just floating on top of your eye, a small magnet works great Click the image to open in full size.

if its embedded, youll have to get it removed. Keep in mind that eye has NO feeling so its a fairly simple process. leave it in there and the eye will grow a layer of "skin" over it.

Fill your eye with Visine or the like, cover it with gauze or cotton *****, and tape it closed to heal.

I work construction and get things in my eye all the time. Sometimes it can be excruciating and almost impossible to keep your eye open if you scratch it. But everytime I have taken this approach, it's almost as good as new when I awake.

But yeah, it might not hurt to get it checked out.

No. It's not that bad. I've had rust drilled out of the sclera before and it's really no big deal. You have no nerves there.

I usually do if Im cutting something or using an air hammer/chisel. Other than that, I don't. Those are really the only times you're exposed to that danger, but other accidents do happen. (this time it was from an air hammer and chisel sans safety glasses)

GO TO THE DOCS ASAP-- there could still be bits of metal rusting in your eye-
I had a peice of metal in my eye once, and within 5 minutes was in the car having someone drive me to eye doctors. not something you wnat to mess around with

Wow, this is crazy a bud of mine had this happen about a year ago.

He's had 4 surgeries and still has recovered vision in his eye, he was supposed to have one more around xmas but I haven't talked to him in a couple of months.

Either way, its prolly pretty serious (internetz is serius bidniss), so get it checked out.

On a side note, my friend has to wear an eye patch now and whenever I see him I make a parrot joke, its pretty funny.

Wow, I've had to wear an eyepatch two different times for two weeks at a time. I'll get it checked out tomorrow, but I was just too curious because any other time it hasn't been a big deal. But those any other times, it wasn't affecting my vision.

I've had this happen when I was sanding metal with a sander. I went to the Doc. They took X-Rays and put some yellow colored **** in my eye to make sure it wasn't scratched then he looked at it through some big microscope looking thingy. Everything turned out fine though. Just go to the doctor and get it checked out!
