i put mine ontop of my desk, if you put it on the ground and you have carpet, thats a bad idea in my opinion...the carpet gets dusted and your computer has fans and it's practically getting dust(dirt) in your server...

but it's up to you Click the image to open in full size.

mine used to be on a fileing cabinet because i have a dog that loses hair

now that its in a different room its on hardwood floors.

carpet can actually carry a static charge and could damage your computer although it will probably get struck by lightening before that happens but its possible.

dirt and dust and everything that can be found near the floor of a house are not good for a computer, you want it on a hard flat surface.

everybody has seen the pics of the mice in the computer.....

i keep it on the floor, on carpet. I just dust it out every once and a while, im not gonna have computer fans right by my head and a tower taking up my desk. And the computer will not build up static electricity on the carpet. I've messed with my computer while it was open on carpet, built computers on carpet, laid out components on the carpet. It's not big deal, just touch the bare metal in your case before you touch any parts to ground yourself

edit: had a typo, carpet was spelt crapet

Well i dont think it matters. I keep mine in my computer desk its about a inch off the ground. I would never put mine on the carpet tho, not because of static, but because i have fans on the bottom of my case. If i set it on the carpet they wont work right.
I say put it were you want.

as long as you don't drag your feet across the carpet and then touch the motherboard, you don't really have to worry about the static.

The desk I have was designed to have the computer tower in it. It's got a door that opens up, and there is the computer sitting on roll-out shelf.

Exactly.

I am betting that her driving force behind this is because she knows deep down inside that there is a patch of carpet under the computer that will never get vacuumed as long as the computer is sitting there. She can't sleep at night knowing this.
