Can you convert a dirtbike into a streetbike easily? If so, how:

Should you buy a bike without a title in Illinois?

For $350 though, might be worth checking out - would be a fun side project.

Depending on your state laws, to make a bike street legal you'll need to hook up that electric starter, brake lights, turn signals, horn, headlights, speedometer & gauges, and get DMV to create a VIN. Oh, and you need to consider if a offroad bike can handle the rigors of daily driving. I know my 200cc 2 stroke wouldnt be able to handle an hour commute in traffic without exploding.

Better to find something street legal to begin with.

Buy street legal light & fender kit off of e-bay for $100-$200
Buy DOT legal street or enduro tires for $200
????

This.

Furthermore, the 4 stroke race bikes are highly unreliable when used in a street setting. They have a very limited oil capacity.

EDIT: KTM, Husky and some of the Euro manufacturers make street legal race bikes, but what I meant was that they're really designed for shorter rides and not necessarily daily commuting. I suppose you could though.

getting a title for a bike (or car) in IL can be a huge pain if the bike has no certificate of origin or some other type of official document saying it was never stolen. it's not worth the hassle if you can get the same bike elsewhere with a title. i'm not sure how this changes with age as i know some older bikes were not sold with a title or anything. the jist i got was that it is nearly impossible if you don't want to spend a ton of money.

making a bike street legal in IL is not that difficult. baja designs sells DOT conversion kits, and once you have installed it you just have to call sec state to find an inspection station and get it looked over.

Depends on the bike and the state. Many laws have changed recently regarding this. Find a street bike.

so the consensus is, buy a street bike

how about the lost title situation, is it worth it to buy a bike without a title? DO I need insurance for the bike? or just liability insurance?

you mentioned IL in the first post... assuming that's where you live, i gave you the answers. you need state minimum insurance for a bike, unless you take out a vehicle loan in which case you'll need full coverage. comprehensive usually is not very much extra and you'll want it in case the bike gets stolen.

My friend let me borrow his KTM, crazy race bike. It was fun, but a pain-in-the-*** to ride. You had to take off launching it or it would stall.

Fuel wasn't cheaper either. I think it was $11/gallon lol

Title battles are never worth it. You can prob get a titled + running old street bike for $500.

Thanks for the responses guys, especially ragnaroek, so I have continued to look for something street worthy and am looking at picking up a suzuki gn 125 scooter, in Illinois this does not require a license, therefore should not require insurance as well, do you guys recommend riding gear for a scooter of this CC (125)?

a 400 win get you going np... it's the 6-6 that might be an issue. you need a low center of gravity.

Your best bet is to call your local DMV cause it varies state to state but it can be done. Cheap way to get a fun bike... CR500 motard is my dream bike. Would be soo much fun on the street, such wheelie machine:

I had a supermoto. It was very meh. Wr250x. If I get another it will be 400 at the smallest. I may get a dual sport instead. A x660l.
