Default CLOSER SHAVE ? Razor or electric shaver ???

ive been using bic razors for like 4 years now, but i just wanted to know if one of those electric shavers like norelco etc (with the 3 circles at the end), give a closer shave than a traditional razor ? Just wanted to know the answer before I drop 100$ on one Im basically just looking for the closest shave possible.....thanks alot Click the image to open in full size.

a conventional razor will always give you a much closer shave than electric, it doesn't matter how much you spend on an electric, it will never get as close as the conventional. And a straight razor will get even closer if you know how to use it.

I regularly use a Braun electric, I have tried all of them though - Norelco, Remington, all the gimmicks. When I want a close shave that won't be stubble in a couple of hours, I have to use a razor and shave gel.

I really like the Braun one as well. I'm probably a freak for doing this, but here's how I do it..

My Norelco with the 3 circles work better for me if I haven't shaved in a couple days, but they don't cut very close. The Braun one isn't good at cutting if you aren't shaving pretty much daily. So I use either one depending on how long it's been since I shaved last. Then I always use the Braun to shave my chin since it cuts closer even than the regular one. Then for my neck/under chin I have to use the regular bic razor after the electric since the electric ones don't seem to want to cut close. Just dry shave it Click the image to open in full size.

But for awhile I just used the Braun and regular one.

I don't think any electric razor will shave you closer than or equal to a blade, but I know of at least two that will come very close.

1) GOOD: Any of the Norelco triple head 7000, 8000, or 9000 series razors. They can all be rinsed clean, which is a big plus.

2) GREAT: Any of the Panasonic Sonic, Pro-Curve, or Vortex razors give a very close shave, especially the wet/dry models that let you shave with lotion. Click the image to open in full size.

fwiw, I own a Norelco right now and it does a good job, but if I were to buy again I would probably get one of the Panasonics.

why is it that people shave w/ shaving cream or lotion. this is a serious question. i never once used it or even after-shave.

Do you use soap as a lubricant? or just water?

shaving cream helps to hair to stand up, away from the face, so that you can cut it more easily, and it also prevents irritation and sterilizes (usually has some kind of alcohol or other astringent). I need some sort of lubricant between my blade and face, probably because I have a pretty hairy face, I know some people who have very little hair on their face who can get away with 1 disposable razor and some water for months and months, but I have to shave everyday and I have to change razor blades every 3-4 days if I am using conventional. The times I have shaved with only soap (in an emergency), I did not get a very good shave and my skin was somewhat irritated.

with a conventional safety razor? or with electric?

I find it amazing that you could possibly drag sharp metal against your head and face with no water. Of course, if you're talking about with an electric razor, that's normal, I never use gel/lotion with my electric, although there are brands that come with the Nivea lotion dispensers.

I've dry shaved a number of times with a regular razor. Maybe because my face is so greasy it's not a problem.

Personally I think the standard non-electric razors are great for shaving close, but I really cant use them or I break out or get irritated skin.

The 3 circle norelco suck IMO because the design is unconventional and useless. I tore my face to pieces using it.

The linear electric shavers like panasonic shave pretty close and leave me the least irritated. I usually follow the shave with a good lotion. Click the image to open in full size. Click the image to open in full size.

I have a straight blade just for kicks, don't know how to use it effectively, it's like half an hour for some little afternoon shave Click the image to open in full size. (actually brought a couple)

i mainly use M3 or Quartto4, the m3 gives you much closer shave than anything else.

my phillip twin heads e-razor just for the quick on the go shave, it's decent but no where near the result of a blade/razor.

Haha straight blade...Someday I'll go to an old fashioned barber shop and get shaved by one of them for the heck of it.

I use Mach 3 and shaving gel. You get the closest shave once you get out of the shower so the warm water has softened up your hair. Warm water plus shaving gel. I'll neve ruse and electric.

get one of those fogless shower mirrors, shaving in the shower really helps. and use mosturizing lotion before and after, some of that nivea after shave stuff helps too. a new mach 3 blade every time is the only way to go, if i use one twice i get all kinds of razor burn but with a new one it works very well.
