Default Best AWD/4WD System?

So, I'm curious as to your thoughts on the best AWD/4WD system (not just in terms of performance but also practicality).

I don't know too much about some of these, but I do know that Mitsubishi's Super All-whell Control System can not only split torque between front and rear, but also left and right. If I'm not mistaken, Honda's SH-AWD can do this as well, though not to the extreme that Mitsubishis can.

I do also know that ATTESA-ETS on the Nissan Skylines is pretty much a RWD drivetrain that sends power to the front wheels when the system deems it is necessary.

Also, I understand that Subaru's AWD is full time?

And how similar are the AWD/4WD systems from these companies? Like is BMW's xDrive any different from Mercedes's 4MATIC or Audi's Quattro?

My thoughts would be Audi's Quattro though I've heard good things about Honda's SH-AWD?

2 wheel drive and my left foot > awd

OK, not really. But it's way more fun.

awd = added weight, cost and complexity.

Everything I hate about chicks.

I mean cars.

I can personally vouch for the Audi BMW and Mercedes and I think quattro takes the cake IMO

I was intrigued by ATTESA but don't know much about it.

Honda's SH-AWD seemed to better Audi in that situation. I also think Mitsubishi's S-AWC is impressive.

bmw xdrive is very subpar.

I'd say SH-AWD and newest quattro w/ sport diff are comparable; Acura may be slightly more capable but also large increase in complexity and electronic control.

No idea about the mitsubishi stuff

Honda's SH-AWD has bested Subaru's and Audi's, which are the next-best, in the YouTube video shown above and other tests.

I think at this point, Acura's SH-AWD is still the king of torque vectoring. Audi has some add-on that will mimic it, for an additional charge. EDIT--Danza clarified it, it's the "Sport Differential"

I'm currently considering buying one of two Mitsus that have the S-AWC, which seems to use torque vectoring as well.

At this point, SH-AWD is the best and it's still not really close. It's the best from a performance standpoint and from a weather standpoint.

The Honda systems with the active rear differential are pretty amazing.

I grew up driving all sorts of 4wd rigs like Jeeps, Blazers, trucks and others and The VTM system coupled with the VSA in the Pilot/Ridgeline/MDX is very well designed.

Also, everyone should keep the following in mind.

Several automakers, especially BMW, have a habit of testing Audi Quattro cars with 2 cars on a zero or near zero (ice, rollers) with the ABS system deactivated (fuse pulled).

Without this, the quattro system cannot pulse the brake of the zero traction tire to generate the torque handling capability to that axle.

I strongly suggest driving the cars and considering only unbiases sources (not temple of vtec, bmw driving events, etc.)

@Patrick, I think Subaru's system is better than the Honda RealTime. But not better than the SH-AWD Acura uses.

There's a reason you can't get SH-AWD on an entry level Acura, but you can get it on an entry level Audi and it's more than brand strategy

I think he means that SH-AWD is more complex and expensive than Quattro.

that system has been around for awhile, and it's only been getting better and better each generation of the skyline. only thing is, i've never seen (or youtubed) a r35 in snow, or other bad weather.

Because it's good for off-roading, but not sporty on-road performance.

The best systems (Acura > Audi > Subaru > all) do both.

I voted Subaru....I'm on my second now and I must say it's fantastic, I don't know of the others though.

from a performance standpoint id have to say that Subaru is pretty bad. I say this because the entire engine block sits in front of the front axel. On a boxer engines the longitudinal length of the engine is considerable thus causing a large moment around the front axel. Also, ideally you would want all the weight to be in between the two axels.
