Default 2 fans electrocuted outside Talladega track - NASCAR

This is sad, going to an event you love and this happens.....(No I am not a NASCAR fan)

"TALLADEGA, Ala. - Two NASCAR fans were electrocuted in a campground outside Talladega Superspeedway when a flagpole they were erecting touched power lines.

Donny Lynn Wright, 42, of Remlap and Keith Alan Stell, 39, of Birmingham died Monday, said track spokeswoman Kristi King. Talladega County Coroner Jerry Castleberry pronounced them dead at the scene.

The Aaron’s 499 race will be run at the track on Sunday. Fans commonly use poles to fly flags touting their favorite driver.

Witnesses said Wright and Stell were attempting to anchor a flagpole when it was caught by wind and pushed into power lines running along a road outside the track.

“They were trying to pull the flagpole back off the lines,” said James Snider, who was sitting about 30 yards away from the victims’ camp site. “I heard a loud pop that sounded like a firecracker, and I went running because the power lines fell. They were both lying on the ground, and two women were trying to get to them to get them away from the wires.”

Note to self: Don't erect a metal flag pole near power lines. Ooof.

In Charlotte a few years back, a couple guys never made it back home after watching a race at Lowe's. Their wives got concerned, sent police to look for them at the track. They found them in their tent - they had tried to cook on a grill *inside* their tent and suffocated (monoxide poisoning, whatever). Doh.

Thats not funny, those guys are -dead- now. Someone's father, brother, etc.

Everyone makes a dumb mistake every now and then. Apparently, the wind blew the flag pole away and thats why it got caught. Yeah, trying to get it down was dumb... oh well.

It blew over into the wind, I don't think they stood under powerlines and did it.

Sucks

So I guess it was also funny when the scoutmasters were electrocuted in almost the exact same way a year or so ago?

No it's not funny.

It could've happen to anyone.

Your putting up your flag pole and then the wind catches it and it starts to fall. Your first instinct is to grab it and get it up right again. This pole just so happens to catch a powerline and zap they got electrocuted.

This is sad.

You're in a crowded field with only a little plot of land that you had to fight fourteen guys named bubba for and you want to put up a flag.

You notice you're a good distance away from those powerlines but damn it sucks that this is the only place we could find. Oh well, we're a good 30 ft. away.

You put the flagpole up which, of course, is root(30*50) tall. The wind blows, it hits the lines, you die.

Douchebags on HT laugh at you while your family is in greif over losing a loved one for something so trivial

And so was everyone else. Talladega needs to make restriction zones for their tent and rv areas.

From what I've been told they just fillup the in-field...so it's surprising this hasn't happen before.

Pic from the in-field at Talladega...yeah they had a lot of room to move it.
The damn power poles are the same height as most of the flag poles.

then common knowledge should kick in and say, hmm this dosent seem like a good idea, or maybe we should anchor it down so it dosent move.

then they should put a limit on the height of the flag pole poeple should be able to put up, or just have them removed because im sure they get in the way of people wanting to see.

I'm sure they will put a limit on them in the future, Nascar puts limits on everything else. I'm suprised they didn't think of this before too though.

I think 3/4 of this thread has done something dumber then these guys did and got away with it.

What gratification do you get out of making fun of two men who died by accident?
