Default 1 Trillion in Minerals found in Afghanistan

Well, looks like its time for every insurgent to roll around in H2's with spinners shooting gold covered AK's at coalition forces.

Quote:
WASHINGTON A team of U.S. geologists and Pentagon officials has discovered vast mineral wealth in Afghanistan, conceivably enough to turn the scarred and impoverished country into one of the world's most lucrative mining centers, The New York Times reports.
"There is stunning potential here," Gen. David H. Petraeus, commander of the United States Central Command, told the paper in a report published Monday. "There are a lot of ifs, of course, but I think potentially it is hugely significant."
Americans discovered nearly $1 trillion in untapped mineral deposits in Afghanistan, including iron, copper, cobalt, gold and critical industrial metals like lithium, according to the report. The Times quoted a Pentagon memo as saying Afghanistan could become the "Saudi Arabia of lithium," a key raw material in the manufacture of batteries for laptops and cell phones.
During a visit last month to Washington, Afghan President Hamid Karzai said his nation's untapped mineral deposits could be even higher perhaps as much as $3 trillion.
The mineral resources are a "massive opportunity," Karzai said at a May 13 event with Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton held at the U.S. Institute of Peace.
The report in the Times said the U.S. Geological Survey began aerial surveys of Afghanistan's mineral resources in 2006, using data that had been collected by Soviet mining experts during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan in the 1980s. Promising results led to a more sophisticated study the next year.
Then last year, a Pentagon task force that had created business development programs in Iraq arrived in Afghanistan and closely analyzed the geologists' findings. U.S. mining experts were brought in to validate the survey's conclusions, and top U.S. and Afghan officials were briefed.
So far, the biggest mineral deposits discovered are of iron and copper, but finds include large deposits of niobium, a soft metal used in producing superconducting steel, as well as rare earth elements and large gold deposits in Pashtun areas of southern Afghanistan, the report said.
In an op-ed published last month in a London newspaper, former Afghan finance minister Ashraf Ghani, wrote: "Afghanistan is rich in minerals including copper, iron, marble, chromite, manganese and emeralds. With good governance in place, these assets can generate funds."

So this is why we pulled troops out of Iraq, and into Afghanistan(sarcasm).

I can see it now, in the war room. Some Cheney-like tool: "Dude, there's a trillion dollars worth of obtainable crap under Afghanistan. It can totally change the public's perception of the reason we invaded Iraq, so that we can successfully invade Iran. Let's see. What can we find to spend a trillion dollars on that 40% of the public will accept?"

Does this mean we get the realistic electric cars we should have had over ten years ago?

Cliffs: not as long as we still have thousands of barrels of oil spilling into the ocean

This could be extremely significant. Extremism is so rampant in that country partially because poverty is also so rampant. A huge injection of wealth could help the US "win" the war there and enable us to pull out. Maybe that's just wishful thinking since it's not like mining operations can just be stood up overnight, especially in a war zone.

Yes an no. Egypt and Saudi Arabia still produce extremists. I do think the likelihood of a citizen from those countries to become an active extremist is lower due to the lower poverty.

Well it would also make sense that we are there for those resources and knew about them for some time...

LOL, it doesn't matter really. The rich will get richer and the poor will stay poor. The impoverished farmer will never see any of it because of the mass amount of corruption in the country. Warlords/businessmen like Gul Agha Sherzai and Ahmed Wali Karzai (presidents brother) will make the millions.

Bingo, my thought exactly.

The first two already rich guys will start up mining businesses, hire poor laborers (farmers, etc) to dig it up and profit like crazy. Then gold plated Lamborghinis will show up the next day.

If all those "trillion" dollars worth of gemstones was circulated into currency, it would depreciate the current value of gemstones by a lot.

Mining conglomerates manage the flow of precious metals and substances onto the general market to stop devaluation.

What I would be concerned with is Russia going "3.1658^13 rubbles? Dibs!" China wanting to add 6.832^11 yen to the coffers, and any other regional power interested in those areas after our troop draw backs in the coming years.

chances are the impoverished farmer will profit since they are the ones who own the land that the minerals are in. the rich will get richer, but a good deal of the poor will get their due..

China has already secured the copper rights. Look for them to grab the lithium rights next. If this was a big conspiracy for the U.S. to grab everything they are doing a horrible job....

this is such a great idea.
