Default How reliable/safe are tire plugs?

I have worked in shops and patched tires before. However, not I do not work in a shop and am worried that the puncture in my tire will "not be repairable". If I still worked in a shop then I would use a small patch and repair it myself. I don't want to have to argue with some salesman about this. I have never personally used a plug for repairing a tire. Are they a safe, long term repair? The tire is a BFG Drag Radial, BTW.

It really depends where the injury occurred. Sidewall punctures are not repairable with plugs or patches. I'm not sure if I would plug or patch a drag radial tire, though. You better off just replacing it.

The puncture is about 1" from where the tread ends. If I had access to a patch-plug I'm sure it would be a safe repair. At any tire shop it's always about the up-sell. Most people don't know how to properly patch a tire anyhow.

With a drag radial you are better off just replacing the tire. How close to the sidewall is the puncture?

It's about an inch away from the sidewall. I know the tire is repairable, I just don't have the resources to do it myself right now. I don't trust anyone else to get the job done. I also don't want to be told by some salesman that knows nothing about cars that it "can't be fixed".

ran a plug in one of my tires for over a year with no problem and i put it through its paces ha it was a front and it would see an occasional launch and stuff, stayed in fine until the tire was so worn that it just needed to be replaced. do it, its a good cheap fix.
