Filler rod has nothing to do with what you like, you use the correct filler rod for the specific application. thats like trying to use wood glue on metal it might stick together but thats not the intended purpose and will fail prematurely

Re: whats your favorite stainless filler rod? (Lam.N)
my reason is becasue it comes out more of a grey than a nice shiny bead and thats not because im using to much heat, 316-316L seems to have a nice reflection to it when welding 304.

i believe AFI(turbojesse) uses 316 rod and pipes, and yeah they lay vary nice looking beads.
but 316 filler rod on 304... how good would the manifold up?
if you must use a 316rod just use the 316 pipes while your at it, its only a few bucks more.

I've heard that welding with 309 it will come out shinier then say 308, never messed with 316 yet though.
BTW that super missile rod comment was pretty funny

Re: whats your favorite stainless filler rod?
Like everyone mentioned, you need to use the filler that the job calls for.
I have noticed that 309L tends to come out shinier on hot welds.
For 304 pipe, I use 316L. I used to use 308 but feel that have 316 on hand covers more ground. 316 is also fine for 304.
I really love welding with 347 when making manifolds from 321. It's so soft and the bead comes out so shiny.

When I say it "covers more ground", I just mean that you can weld 303, 304 and 316 with it. I can't really detect a difference in the way it welds compared to 308 honestly. 309L you can tell the difference, but 308-316 not so much.

Re: whats your favorite stainless filler rod?
You use 308 filler for 304 parent material.
Now look how this thread has gone? It's turned into " OH LAWDY! 316 Makes mah welds purdyer! I read it on the internets!"

Re: whats your favorite stainless filler rod?
I find no difference in how they weld 308L, 309, 316L.
To look at you will see no difference it's just the application I will change from various alloys.
For me, welding 304 I will use 308L. For mild steel to stainless I use 309 and for corrosive or salty enviroments 316L.
