Re: Questions on motorcycle engine swaps into cars
Funny this thread comes up now.
I have acquired a free crx and gsxr 1000, and plan on entering the 24 hrs of Lemons with it (under $500 racecar).
The motor is going to sit backwards in the engine bay, and go to a diff/reverse drive housing to get the wheels to spin the right way. The car probably won't be that fast when compared to some other options, but when you have the ability and the parts, why not? Grassroots Motorsports just did an article on one of their project cars that pertains to just this idea.

i would like to see your car run.to bad im on the west coast though,we ran the t hill event in december.we had a 87 mr2 that was set up pretty good.we followed the rules to a tee.to bad for us that not many of the other teams did.there where like 6 spec e30 bmws and like 3 nice road race 944s.two road race integras.one ran the t hill 25 hour.so we found out how these races work.well after the fist day.we swaped all the struts for new ones.cut the coils with a cut wheel.lowered the car about 1 3/4 inch.picked up 8 seconds the next day so that was huge.we had three pro drivers and we only got as high as 10th over all out of 105 cars.still not too bad for all the cheating going on.so our plan for the car now is to maybe drop a hyabusa in it mid engine.with a tubular sub frame and open diff.should be plenty fast.

Yeah, a MK1 Mr2 would be so perfect for the swap, but unfortunately I have a free CRX, not Mr2.
Who knows, I might do this and just DD the car for awhile to see how it goes.

that was our plan to do to our mr2 for the next lemons race.hyabusa of build the stock motor to somewhere around 180 hp.then we might be competitive.dont be afraid to build it up.just dont clean anything and no new shiny parts.thats what the judges are looking for.you could have a fully built road race motor and not get a bs penalty as long as its all greasy looking on the outside.good luck with your build on the crx.

You would have to build a diff like Grassroots Motorsport did for their car. Also I was thinking, reverse might be able to be housed in the same gearbox.

Re: Questions on motorcycle engine swaps into cars
no you do not have to reverse the rotation on a bike motor.that box in your picture is just a box with a diff and a reduction gear and some of these boxes have reverse in them.the simplest way is to mount a diff just behind the bike motor the sproket is machined to bolt on to where the ring gear was on the diff.you run a chain from the bike motor to the diff.just like a bike works.the counter shaft turns the wheel and the bike goes forward.same on a car.

No, I understand.
I would be placing the motor backwards in the engine bay, behind the front axles. Without reversing the rotation, I would effectively (or not so effectively) be making a RWD/rear steer CRX. Just ponder it for a moment, because I was initially planning on making it like you said, as that is what we use on the SAE Formula car (uses a 600cc Honda F4i motor).

Re: Questions on motorcycle engine swaps into cars
Well, I thought of that, but then you would not have the space. The most compact way of doing it would still be a couple of feet long, as you have the length of the motor, plus the trans, PLUS the diff housing. And if you are running a chain drive to some type of diff, why not throw an extra gear in there and reverse the rotation? Then you can mount it more effectively, plus then you don't have all that weight in front of the front axle (and you can claim that you have a mid engined CRX technically).
Also we are casting aluminum transmission housings for SAE here at UCF, so I have the knowledge and ability to create it for nearly nothing.

coaster did you see the pics of the lemons car?the geo metro knome.its no bigger that a civic or crx engine bay and it fit really well.just ahead of the axle centerline.if i knew how to post pics i would show you some.it didnt look really any differant than where the stock motor would be.the only concern the guy had was the chain being very short.like the one on that diff box a few posts back but it did 17 hours of track time.

Yeah, as a matter of fact, I JUST watched that.
And a K20 would be WAY more expensive. I plan on doing the whole thing for under $500.

Re: Questions on motorcycle engine swaps into cars
well if you look at the pic on post#41 if you where to put a ring gear on the opposite side of the diff from the sprocket you would then mount a good reduction gear starter for your reverse.as its done on an Australian west d sports racer as well as many other low costs and home built motorcycle powered cars.radical has made a box that has the diff and drive flanges i cant remember if it has reverse or not.its on the new pro sport.

Re: Questions on motorcycle engine swaps into cars
here are a few pics of a fisher fury made in england.its mounted north south like a legend car.with a small diff and independent rear suspension.i think one of these cars would be a blast to drive.this same mounting could
be done in a civic or crx using the exaust tunnel for the drive shaft.

Re: Questions on motorcycle engine swaps into cars
here is a shot of a d sports racer that i helped build in australia.they must use reverse there to meet fia rules.this is a west race car.the starter is mounted inside the diff case as you can see the bendix gear and slotted holes to adjust the chain.pretty simple set up.
