Default My D16A6 powered sandrail (build thread/pics)

Alright so many of you have asked to see pics of my 'rail. I have been keeping most of the pics to myself because it wasn't finished until this weekend (its still not really finished, you know how that goes). But anyways, I took it out to the dunes over the 4th of July weekend and was totally amazed! This thing ripped! there wasn't a hill out there it wouldn't climb. For those familiar with the Florence dunes, I took it up Comp hill with ease, the south Jetty hill with ease, the big dune at Frontier no problem. I got some good pics out in the sand, and a couple videos I will post when my buddy gets back with the video cam. I had it out for several 2-3 hours runs and the only problem I had was it was getting a little hot at times, and it needs a stronger clutch. I'll just post a few pic for now, and as I get some more time I will put up the build thread and specs of the rail (and the video).

DuneFest? I think its the last weekend of this month? We may do a Sandlake trip in the next week or two to do a little tweaking on the 'rails before DuneFest.

Looks pretty cool, can you post some pics of the fab work? Like how you mounted the motor, whats driving it, your suspension setup, how your shifting setup works? I've always been interested in building something like this.

I'll get some more pics up later, the 'rail is back in storage for another week or two (until I take it out again). Everything is pretty straight forward though. When I bought the 'rail it was a SandSprite frame, it has VW IRS trailing arms in the rear, and VW front beam suspension in the front, it had a VW 1600 dual port with weber carb. I yanked the motor out, then solid mounted the D16A6 and the D16A6 trans in the frame. I wanted to for now anyways retain the VW trailing arms (mostly because of time) so I mated the honda axles to the VW axles (cut, pinned, sleeved, welded the two together) I placed the motor pretty much in the middle of the frame so to try to have a decent balance, which made my passanger side axle pretty short. I thought I was going to have huge issues with axles and suspension travel, but it gave me zero headaches out there :-) so far so good. The shift linkage gave me hell for quite a while, in fact I almost scrapped the hole idea and gave up, then one day it hit me like a ton of bricks, the design is very simple, and it works well. I do need to doctor it a bit to find reverse. Here is a pic of what it looked like the day I brought her home.

I'm thinking about it. I am kinda saving my turbo goodies for my H22 powered sandrail that I plan to build next. We'll see. It is actually pretty damn quick as is, and can be quite a bit quicker cheap/easily.

Yeah, I couldn't keep the sand out of my mouth, its hard to drive this thing and not be smiling or lauphing. All of my hard work payed off. Good times for sure.

well most of your turbo kit would transfer over to the H22 project...you should get a jump start on it.

I'm thinking about it, it would tone down the exhaust a bit :-)

Check the new vid from today, tossin' a little sand. I swapped a b16 throttle body on since my last time out, I can feel the difference.
