I have an interview tomorrow for a welding position and don't really know how to dress. Any tips?

Probably pretty dependant on the company. If it's a muffler shop then i wouldn't expect too much out of somebody coming in for an interview.

You're going to have to make the call, you know the company. It's always better to over dress for an interview than to under dress....

well, every welding position interview i've ever gone for required a skill test. since welding isn't just about experience it's about whether or not you can actually fit and weld.
in that respect i wore something that looked decent but that i wasn't afraid of burning holes in or getting covered in grinding dust/sparks/mill oil

I've only been interviewed once and was told to dress casual because I was going to be taking a walk through a shop. Any tips on what not to wear? Are jeans or dickies appropriate?

I would call the person I was going to interview with and simply ask. Ask if they plan on you having you weld some coupons and based on that answer, wear what's appropriate.

button down shirt and casual pants, but not jeans.

if you over dress you will look like a dork and it may convey the message: "hey, i got no skills but alteast i look good".

when it boils down to it, if they are hiring you based on how you dress then you don't want to work there anyway.

my tip: wear some nice safety shoes so that when they take you through the shop (if they are strict with safety they might want you to wear some toe caps) this way it shows you came prepared.

Just kidding, I agree with Tony, it all depends on the company. What kind of place is it? What kind of welding too? If it's just TIG I wouldn't be afraid to get down to it in a suit/tie.

It's TIGing stainless. I am embarassed to say this but I don't own a suite.........or a tie. I've never needed one thus far, any recomendations as to where I could get one for a good price?

I wouldn't go spending money on a suit if you don't have other uses for one. khakis, dress shirt, and tie would be very appropriate. However as others have said, call and ask a few questions about the interview like walking through the shop, and welding tests. Just let them know that you wanted to make sure that you dressed appropriately for what they had planned for the interview.

most department stores have decent suits packages for $150-200...just make sur eyou get black so you can use it twice for funerals too

denim jacket, denim shirt, denim pants and a denim welding cap. This shows that you are at the peak of fashion but also ready to wrangle up some serious welds at a moments notice.

If they said "casual" then I would wear khaki's and a button up shirt. Tuck your shirt in and if you have safety boots that are in good condition then definitely wear those too. Suits (and sometimes ties) can be overkill these days for most interviews. Interviews are all about first impressions, how you present yourself to the company says a lot, but how you handle yourself and speak can have more of an impact.

The last welder we hired wore jeans and a clean collared shirt.

Lets be honest, you are not going for a management position...

They will be more concerned with what you know, and what you can do, than what you look like.

Hell, the guy we hired looks like cross between a hells angel and a pirate.... but damn he can weld.

I work for an international pharmaceutical company with plants all over the world. Hell we have 5 plants in California alone.


A suit is major overkill, they might feel like you will be afraid to get dirty.... welding is not a clean job...

Well I made a wal*mart stop at 11:00 last night. Picked up some black dress pants, a long sleeve shirt, a pair of shitty shoes (being returned ), and wore a tie from my graduation.

I am not a good interviewee, I sometimes fumble with words a lot so that's was probably the worst part lol. They told me to come back at 11am for a weld test and I did. The guy was super impressed with my 19yo skills and he showed me the welds I had to beat Piece of cake, welds came out really nice. Then he commented about how I dressed earlier lol

All in all it was good
