Default Has anyone built a gokart/dune buggy using a singlecam?

Me and a couple of freinds want to build a singlecam gokart/dune buggy for a senior prject and were wondering if anyone has built a chassis for one or has any suggestions on how to build one?

Planning is the key. If your building the chassis from scratch, your drivetrain, seating, wheelbase, and suspension concept should all be in place in an opened are of the garage. From their you can start to visualize and design your chassis on paper. Use triangulation where you can, and minimize weld joints as much as possible.

Also, you can search the internet for some chassis designs...there are sites that have this. There is also some premade designs for dune buggies for like 20 or 30 bucks online you can find if you google.

IMO a d-series would be too big and heavy. I'd go witha motorcycle engine.

This guy is insane

Hmm well i have had the same idea in my head for a long time. Gotten some planning down on how i would do it.

The most simple thing i can of would be to rip the front crossmember (of course the rest of the front brake and suspension) of a civic. Maybe a crx would be even better since it has the front cross member also. Use a nice d16z6 or whatever comes your way. I would use a auto tranny. Why, making a ghetto *** shift linkage would bring trouble down the line IMO. And 100hp engine on a frame is going to be fun, stick or auto so its all golden. As far as suspension. I would prolly weld the independent suspension up on the rear and use a different style suspension so i wouldnt be breaking axles. Much like mounting the engine on the crossmember then buying huge spring style shocks to mount to the crossmember then to the top of the frame. and have a single pivoting point on the bottom of the frame. Thats if i wanted to get crazy. I would prolly just make a rigid. only if the money was a problem.

How about this. H22-powered, set up for the street but it would be easy to do for off-road. You can read all about it at http://www.kimini.com.

In the state shown there, yes that's a good guess. It wouldn't be hard to set up for off-road, but you'd need much longer axles (or different CVs) to handle all the suspension travel. As shown here it's limited to 6" total bump+droop.

It's also missing a door beam which was added later

I was thinking since usually its a budget build if you were to build something like this for fun. Well at least me. I would a design like this, Of course my drawing skills arent that great but you get the main picture.

I would do that. Then weld the suspension solid so the axles were straight. Hopfully it would take alot of stress of the cv joints.

But then you have infinite roll-stiffness -> big-time oversteer.

WOW! KB58 did you build that or you found that site? I havent had a chance to read through everything cuz im in the middle of helping my cousin rebuild his LS and then my freind with a swap. Anyway what do you guys think a good alternative to brake would be besides hydrualic? and do you know what he did with the shift linkage situation?

Thanks guys I really appreciate everything and when things start coming together there will be lots and lots of pictures

Well for me im not looking to set mine up for any kind of racing, just some weekend fun. So i would have to give up certain things in certain areas. Mine would be a ghetto build. Not something like yours. Haha yours is just crazy.

What transaxle will you be using? You can use a VW bus transaxle (or a similar style transaxle) and an adapter plate, similar to these:

This one is a B17 motor:

This one is a DSM 4G63:

Yeah it's mine, nine years in the making. That picture's pretty old, here's a new one. I'm writing a book about the whole process, which you could use as a guide to build just about anything you want.

are you gonna publish it if so when and how much?

on a sidenote when you dont need a singlecam there a dime a dozen and when you need one people give you ridiculous prices. I guess thats life

It'll be out around the end of the year, self-published

Back on topic, there's a guy in Austrailia that sells plans for small buggies:
http://www.rorty-design.com/co...g.htm

Set up for bike engines, but with a little work, who knows.

Seriously, it would probably be fastest to just buy someone's old buggy and drop the entire Honda powerplant in.

well the only problem with that is we're on a budget build we're only trying to spend $500-$600 and hoping to get a lot of donations since its a school project

and honestly im kinda having doubts that this will come together cuz of money restrictions
