whining noise from tranny what could it be?
i have an si tranny with a honda lsd, drove it today for the first time in about 2 months and there is a whining noise coming from the tranny almost the same sound as a supercharger. the faster you go the louder and higher pitched it gets. it does it on the gas and orff, any ideas what could be causing this? its really annoying you can hear it over the radio

Does it go away when you push the clutch in all the way? If so I would be your mainshaft and countershaft bearings going out. If it does it all the time you may have an issue with the diff assembly.

does it all the time even with the clutch pushed in... i just replaced the bearings on the countershaft cause one was busted.so it might be my lsd? i just fixed that a month before the bearings went out! damn

If it's consistent with vehicle speed, which it is, it would not be mainshaft. it's either counter bearings or diff bearings. I'd be leaning more towards diff bearings.

i installed everything myself. i just had to replace the planetary gearset in the lsd, do you think the new planetary could be causing the noise?

Everything may look mint but it is difficult to replicate spinning a bearing at 2000rpm to see if they are bad or not. You can tell when they are really bad but, when they are slightly bad enough to whine it may be hard to tell when on the bench. Its always good insurance to replace the bearings if you can afford the extra 100-200....while you have the trans open.

I notice that the transmission in my '00 Civic EX whines sometimes. Whenever I'm slowing down to go into a turn, I'll push the clutch in and as I'm going into third or second gear, not actually in gear, but going into, I hear a slight trill, and then it gets louder as I'm actually in gear. I notice it also whenever I'm driving and start accelerating faster than normal; ie: getting on the highway. Is this the same thing as the OP?
