Sent my tranny to a local shop to have the a couple of gears replaced and they told me they had to use a torch to get the old gears off!

Is this shaft is worthless or can I get it polished?

What shop did you take in to that they opted to use a torch rather than a press? I would imagine you could use the shaft again but I would get another one just to be safe. Did you have that junk sitting outside or something?

Tranny was running but was starved for fluid/oil and broke - possibly the reason the gears were so hard to remove. Aside from the torching, I'm not sure the shaft is useable after carefully inspecting the gear:

Yeah that gear is toast! In the very least it is going to make a bunch of noise!

If it got heated the way I think it did most of the gears will be soft as s*** If you can mark the gears with a file they're toast. Honestly you may be better off find another tranny, I've seen them when they get starved for oil, sometimes about the only thing you can salvage is the case.

Ditto ^^^ I would not use it either...Would be better to get another trans in good condition.

I have one right now that the owner starved for oil. 5th gear, 5th gear needle bearing and distance collar are seized to the mainshaft. Haven't had a chance to get them apart yet but know it's gonna take the press to do it.

The only thing salvageable from that trans is most likely going to be the shift change assembly, shift forks, and case. And maybe the 1-2 and 3-4 sleeves/hubs if they aren't beat up.

Would be best to just try and source an entire other trans.
