My OBX came with )))((( . I thought that was right because I've seen that configuration several times before. Looks like the OBX monkeys just throw it together however they feel like doing it

im not doubting you or earl or even quaife. im just throwing this up on the table so we can all try to figure out the "right way"

after reading your thread, i was searching around a bit, it seems as though the D-series obx's have the washers alighned the way that you had suggested...and i also know that the b series obx is symetrical. (the center part, which holds the washers, and both outer "drive gears" are the same) not sure if its simply a differance between d & b perhaps ??

Nah, the discrepancy is due to OBX sucking. I've done hours of research in the past few days and I've seen every configuration imaginable, straight from OBX.

Bottom line - you want maximum axial preload. That means there are two possibilities:

()()() or )()()(

I've decided that the better method is )()()( because it compresses the middle two washes down inside the sleeves. The ()()() method seems less stable. I'll show you what I mean tomorrow with pictures.

Default more support for your final idea

the thing that comes to my mind is thus:

() = pressure distributed around the entire ring of metal
)( = pressure focused on one point

with that in mind

()()() = 3 distributed / 4 focused
)()()( = 4 distributed / 3 focused

the above includes the mating surface with the housing naturally
so i would think you are right about which to go with

I spent another few hours updating the first page. All new pics now that the washer dilemma has been resolved.

Also, I have a bunch of new pics to upload. Part 3 is going to be bearing and final drive related.

Next step, thinner 80mm case shims, .030" and .020" to start with.

Waiting on the tooling costs before having a batch run.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">To fix the problem, Quaife started using the Bellville washers inside the diff to PRE-LOAD the axle gears. Pre-loading puts tension on the axle gears and keeps them from clunking around.

Therefore: the washers are SUPPOSED to raise the differential housing. When you torque the differential housing on, the washers compress, thus pre-loading the differential gears.
</TD></TR></TABLE>

Of the two OBX LSDs that I have both had the )))((( pattern when I opened them. One has A LOT of rattle internally and the other did not (very little) Wouldn't using the )()()( pattern in the already tighter LSD cause too much preload and therefore prematurely wear on the washers? BTW, on the looser LSD I went ahead and did the max preload setting and it matched the very little rattle of the tighter LSD (that is )))((( ) I'd hate to ruin my LSD, the tighter one

Thanks

Okay so that issue set aside. Can one have too much preload?

A very good write up sir.

I just recieved an OBX LSD today for b18b1. Right out of the box, it sorta rattled. I took it apart tonight to check its guts. The nine cap screws were all fine, however inside there were 5 belleville washers oriented as ))()( . I'm off to see what I can find out about the b-series diffs. I'll take some pics tomorrow. Really is an impressive device.
