Is it the stock helical LSD?
Have you put the car in the air and attempeted to make the noise by rotating the wheels by hand?

Yes. If it was the differential, it would make the noise all of the time when turning, shortly before it simply seized.

Re: (laziebun)
put both front wheels in the air and have 1 person hold one side and another try to turn the other side by hand, that'll usually show any dif problems. But that really sounds like a bad axle, maybe you pulled the cv joints apart?

Re: (laziebun)
You can reduild them. The procedure is in the Helm manual.
If there is slop, you should be able to feel it. Raise one front wheel at a time, leave the transmission in gear, and rotate the raised wheel back and forth to observe any slop and where it is occuring.

Re: (srmofo)
Sounds like the same thing that my (we think) factory LSD tranny did when I first drove it
I ended up putting GM Synchromesh additive (2 small bottles) in with my tranny fluid and it stopped
Some LSD's are noisy... some are VERY noisy
